Chapter 23:
Everybody started to come back inside and I saw Brent with the small female. She was tiny and scrawny. She didn't look healthy. She was leaning against Brent and was using him to help walk. Her ribs were sticking out and her legs looked wobbly.
I found Xavier passing out a change of clothes for everybody, wearing a pair of grey sweatpants. He didn't look harmed at all, but I could tell he was exhausted. He kept a close eye on the small female and Brent. She laid down while Brent grabbed clothes for her and him. He gave them to her and she took them, making her way over to a tree. I didn't see Jace anywhere. "Who do you think that little she-wolf is?" I jumped and brought my elbow back, hitting Jace in the gut. He grunted, doubling over.
I sighed and leaned back against the wall. "Jeez, don't walk behind me like that." I said and he composed himself. "I'll keep that in mind. Now, back to the question at hand." He said and I looked back outside to see that everybody came in. "Maybe they're mates." I suggested and he shrugged. "Maybe, let's go find out." He jabbed his thumb towards the door and I followed him downstairs. We passed Xavier's office and heard somebody yelling. I pressed my ear against the door. "Brent, why did you help her? Shes the enemy, god damnit!" Xavier roared and I knew he was talking about the rogue Brent rescued.
"She's not going to hurt anybody! Do you see how small she is?! She looks like a damn skeleton!"
"Why did you save her?!"
"She's my mate!" I knew it. Brent finally found his soul mate. It was quiet for a few minutes. "She can't stay. It's too risky, she could be a spy for the council, hell maybe she's from Jason's pack."
"No! Shes mine, Xavier! You're not taking her away from me! How would you feel if somebody took Jezebelle away? You'd kill anybody in the way of getting her back, and you know that." I've never heard Brent talk like this. I think Brent was a year older than Xavier. He deserved to find his mate.
It was silent and I knew Xavier wasn't going to argue anymore. Brent was right. Xavier would kill anybody who touches me. Jace was standing next to me and breathed through his nose. "I know how it feels to lose your mate and its not a good feeling. The worst kind of pain is the pain of a heartbreak." He whispered and I nodded. He was absolutely right. I don't know what I'd do if I lost Xavier forever. I'd probably kill myself. "Jez, I know you're behind the door. Jace, too." I slowly opened the door and Brent was sitting with his head in his hands. He didn't even look up when we walked in. Xavier was standing in front of us with his muscular arms crossed over his bare chest.
I noticed that he had a few gashes along his chest and I walked up to him and frosted over the gashes. He wrapped his arms around my waist and buried his face in the crook of my neck. "Jace, Brent, go to your mates and see how they're holding up." I said and they both rushed out and the door closed. Xavier breathed in my scent and I rested my head on his chest. He was warm. "Xavier, you can't take Brent's mate away." I said gently and he sighed. "I know," I ran my hands up and down his chest and abs. I couldn't resist. He laughed through his nose. "I still can't believe you're pregnant." He said and I shook my head. "Well, I wouldn't be if we used protection." I said, smiling lightly. "You're not happy about being pregnant, are you?" Xavier looked down at me and I saw disappointment flash in his eyes.
I shrugged. "I am, but I just wish I was at a better time. It was just a huge shock. When I heard that heartbeat on the machine thingy -"
"An ultrasound," Xavier cut in and I nodded, continuing. "When I heard the heartbeat on the ultrasound, it was such a huge shock." He smirked. "Just wait till the weird cravings, morning sickness, and crazy hormones start." He laughed. "I think everybody will run away." I slapped his chest playfully and he laughed. "It'll probably be true, but it's still mean to say it." I whined, pouting and he kissed me. He rested his forehead against mine and smiled lightly at me with a light shining in his forest green eyes. "You're eyes change colors, you know." I said and he smiled crookedly. "I know, they always have." He murmured. "My mom always said she loved my eyes. She loved how they sparkled." He sighed and I kissed his nose. "I wish you could've met her. She would love you." I smiled. "More than you even?"
"Nobody can love you as much as me." He said and pressed his lips against mine in a gentle kiss. "I'm going to see Brent's mate. I'll see you later." I said, pecking his lips before leaving.
I went down to the medical section and found Brent in the infirmary. He was sitting next to a bed with a small, dark haired girl. She was awake and her piercing blue eyes shot up in fear when she saw me. Brent looked up at me. He looked back at his mate and grabbed her tiny hand in his large one. "Clarissa, this is the Luna. She won't hurt you." I slowly walked up to the other side of her bed and knelt down. "Just call me Jezebelle. Don't worry, I won't hurt you." I said softly and she eased up. "You're so little, how old are you?" She hesitated, but answered. "I'm eighteen." She said in a quiet and soft voice. I was kind of shocked. She started to explain. "The Dark Star pack favors males rather than females. The males got fed regularly, while the females barely ate." I blinked. She was from Jason's pack.
She sighed. "It was better when Alpha Webber was around. Alpha Chase is just a prick and a control freak. Mind the language." She said softly and I waved it off. "Trust me, I've heard worse." She smiled lightly and I saw Brent's eyes sparkle. "Jason used to be in this pack and I thought I killed him, but his son, Terence, gave us proof that he was still alive." I said and her eyes widened in surprise. "Terence is still alive? Jason told us he was killed by rogues." I nodded. "He was with a group of rogues that we had found one day. Most of them are still in cells, but Terence has proved to us that he can be trusted. Hes a good kid and would've made a very good alpha one day." She nodded and sadness swam in her eyes.
"Jason and his mate, Trisha, would beat him brutally. I helped him sometimes. He would run off and not come back for weeks, but nobody noticed." She said and I smiled sadly. "Hes doing great, now. Hes a very loyal and trustworthy kid." She nodded. Brent was looking down and I knew I should give them their own time. I stood up. "I'm so happy for both of you. Your mate is an amazing friend and I know he's been waiting to meet you for years. I'll give you two some time alone. If you ever need anything or just want to talk, you can come to me. It was nice to meet you, Clarissa." I said, smiling sweetly and she looked down with gentle smile and a blush on her cheeks. I left and found Jace waiting for me.
I rolled my eyes. "What, are you my permanent bodyguard?" I huffed, following him back into the corridors. "Not permanent, but everybody else is busy." He said, smirking and we sat down on my bed. We watched a movie and I slowly drifted off to sleep.
