Chapter Nine: Get over it.
Tuesday; Luke only had one free lesson today but as usual, he spent it in English which meant it'd be awkward all day. He got to class early again but there was a lot of tension, Ashton refused to make eye contact with him, instead he rested his elbows on his desk and rubbed his temples, Luke rummaged through his now seemingly endless bag a produced the bottle of pills again, "Uhh, here" he said as he walked to the front of the class and slipped them on the table, Ashton looked up and Luke noticed how bloodshot his eyes were, "Are you okay?"
"Haven't been sleeping well, how's your report coming?" he asked unscrewing the lid and putting two of the painkillers in his mouth, he washed them back with the last of his coffee,
"It's not too bad, I'm almost finished. It's difficult though" Luke said walking back to his desk, he picked up his notepad and walked back to Ashton, "Look, this paragraph is 500 words but they all kinda, flow" he said making weird hand gestures with his hands. "I can't, put the right punctuation in and it's bugging me" he huffed, Ashton took the book from him and started reading the report, Luke watched the concentration on his face, the way he held the red pen between his teeth and slid his glasses back up his nose every now and then, he followed Ashton's eyes as he read the words, after a while Ashton took the pen from his mouth and placed it on the desk,
"This is, really good" Ashton said eventually, "The paragraph you're worried about is fine and you don't need to add any more punctuation" he looked up and smiled at Luke,
"Really?" Luke said almost too excited, Ashton was taken back by the smile on his face,
"Really, this is good work for someone who's only been here two months" Ashton said handing the notepad back to him, Luke jumped a little, he was happy about his work. He had this habit of worrying too much about everything. "Hey, Luke" Ashton said after a while, he took his glasses off and placed them in front of him,
"Yeah?"
"You said, well, I thought you were dropping this class?"
"Oh, I am, after this report is handed in, so really today is my last day" Luke explained, he hoped that this conversation would lead to discussing the rest of the weekend.
"Why?" Ashton asked after a few seconds,
"Umm, so nothing's awkward, I guess" Luke said scribbling on paper,
"This isn't awkward" Ashton said with a kind smile,
"Well, I don't know, I just, after the weekend and you going wired, I just assumed tha-"
"It's not awkward, stay in this class. You're doing great and lots of the other teachers won't be so keen on helping you catch up." Luke wanted more than anything to agree to stay in the class, but he knew he couldn't, he shook his head and looked up, "Please?" Ashton asked,
"Umm, okay then, I guess, I can stay" Luke said quietly. The rest of the class eventually came in and first two lessons were spent in silence finishing the reports.
"Right guys, I'm not feeling too good so I'm heading out for the day. I'd advise you all to come back for last lesson and work on your reports though seeing as they're due in tomorrow" Ashton explained,
"Sir, we don't even have you tomorrow so I'm just gonna give it to you Friday, kay?" Michael said with a smirk,
"By all means, give it to me Friday, Mr.Clifford." Ashton said,
"What? Really? I mean, yeah yeah I will" Michael said leaning back on his chair and raising his eyebrows,
"I'll just be sure to inform the headteacher of your expulsion tonight then" Ashton smirked a little and Luke noticed, Michael sat up and looked at his desk, "Tomorrow morning, Mr.Clifford"
"Yes, sir" Michael said writing a few words down.
"Sir, can I talk to you please?" Luke asked, while he was in a good mood maybe he'd talk about the weekend.
"Sure, walk with me" Ashton said putting his laptop bag strap over his left shoulder and heading to the door, his grey coat slung over his right arm, Luke hurried out of the class after him, "So, what's up?" Ashton asked,
"Well, the report, was it really okay?"
"It was great, well, what I read of it was." Ashton smiled, he was in full on teacher mode and Luke didn't like it, "That all?"
"Umm, no" Luke stopped walking and Ashton soon did too, Luke walked up to him, looked left and right then pushed Ashton into the empty classroom behind him,
"What do you think you're doing, Luke?!" Ashton hissed dropping his coat on the table,
"We need to talk" Luke said shutting the door,
"There's nothing to talk about, move"
"No, we need to talk. The weekend, what the hell was that all about?" Luke said gulping, he was so nervous but he knew if Ashton figured that out he'd end the conversation fast, Ashton sighed and sat on the desk,
"A moment of weakness?" Ashton replied, Luke's heart broke a little but he knew it was a lie,
"Liar.." he mumbled,
"It was, nice, but.." Luke was hopeful now, too hopeful, "It can NEVER happen again, do you understand?" Ashton said standing up and taking a few steps toward him, Luke stayed put, "Never, it was stupid and it could cost me, not only this job but my entire teaching career, it will not happen again. You need to get over whatever schoolboy crush you have on me because, newsflash, I'm not gay. You're acting ridiculous, stop obsessing over me and something that meant absolutely NOTHING to me, stop bringing it up and get out, of my way." Luke's heart shattered with every single word, he didn't understand how Ashton could be so heartless and not feel a thing, Luke couldn't bring himself to look away from Ashton's eyes, they were usually sparkly and full of life, now they were just dark and angry. Ashton noticed the hurt on Luke's face and how glassy his eyes had become, "Are, are yo-"
"Sorry" Luke said quickly as he turned around, Ashton went to put his hand on Luke's shoulder when he ran off to the door, "Sorry, I'm, I'm sorry" Luke said opening it and running off down the hall.
"Fuck..." Ashton said sitting back on the table.
He didn't want to give up on Ashton, he wanted him. He wanted to cuddle and kiss him in bed again. He wanted to have tickle fights on the sofa again. He wanted to cook with him again. But Ashton didn't want that. That didn't mean Luke was going to give up though, he wasn't giving up at all.
