Chapter Fifteen: The truth, Ashton.
It had been an awkward few days since Luke had found out about his mother. They were pretty much going about their lives as normal, except with the odd sympathetic look from her. Ashton came by, tutored Luke in his lessons and then left, there was no mention at all about the cancer and it was frustrating him now. "Luke, Luke are you okay?" Ashton asked placing his hand on Luke's shoulder,
"Huh, what, yes?" Luke said shaking himself out of an inappropriate daydream involving Ashton, Luke snickered a little, "I'm fine, sir" he smiled, Ashton frowned a little and carried on going over his book report,
"You did well, Luke" Ashton said with a smile, Luke reached over the table and took the pen from Ashton's hand, Ashton looked at his hand and then locked eyes with Luke, a puzzled look on his face,
"Why are you here?" Luke asked, Ashton looked down and smiled, "Honestly"
"I'm tutoring you" he replied,
"That's not the reason why, anyone could tutor me"
"Not anyone could tutor you with my methods of teaching though" Ashton's responses didn't sound serious or snappy, they seemed almost fake. Luke rested his hand on Ashton's and watched the smile on Ashton's lips form again.
"You want to be here?" Luke asked, Ashton just nodded and looked up,
"I, like spending time with you" Ashton mumbled, Luke smiled and lent in slightly,
"I'm home!" Liz called, Luke snatched his hand away and stood up quickly,
"Hey mum, Asht-Sir's here!" Liz appeared in the doorway and smiled at them both,
"It's late" she said simply, Ashton nodded and collected his things up,
"See you tomorrow, first day back" Ashton said to Luke as he walked out, Luke rolled his eyes at his mother and went upstairs to his room. Where he stayed the rest of the night.
"Morning class, hope you all did your reports" Ashton said to his groggy English class as they took their seats, "You only have this lesson today then you can all go home" he explained as he collected up the reports,
"Luke doesn't have his" Calum shouted smirking,
"I already have his" Ashton replied with a sterner tone to his voice. "I want you all to read the last two chapters of the book, when you've done that right about the significance of their relationship and why it ended the way it did. It's a book with many twists so be careful you don't get sucked in and start talking about something that happened before. Watch your grammar, watch your spelling and read the words carefully" he said writing important key words on the board, "You have an hour, begin." The hour seemed to fly by for Luke, he pretty much knew what he was doing already, Ashton had covered this with him throughout the holidays. After the lesson Luke stuck around, mainly because they never finished their conversation at his house yesterday, but also because he needed the truth. "Everything okay Luke?" Ashton asked as he shuffled papers into some form of order and 'neatly' stashed them in the bottom draw of his desk.
"Yeah, I need to talk to you"
"About?"
"Us.." Luke said, he had a confidence boost and needed to act upon it quickly, or else he'd never know the truth.
"There is no us." Ashton said sternly, the smile on his face instantly dropped,
"You said you liked spending time with me" Luke said quietly,
"I do, but, I have to be around you"
"That's not fair, I already told you you don't have to tutor me!" Luke yelled, he was angry and had no idea why, but it was helping,
"And I already told you, I did!" Ashton yelled back, he stood up and slammed his hands down onto the desk as the words spilled from his lips,
"No you fucking don't, stop messing me about!" Luke yelled again as he spun round so his back was to Ashton,
"Oh for god sake, stop being a child. Just go home Luke."
"No, you're not getting rid of me that easy."
"Leave!"
"No! What was tutoring me all about? Was it really helping me improve my grades? Was it because you felt sorry for me because I get bullied, was it because you secretly like me? No, I know what it fucking was, it was pity. You felt like you had to help because of Calum and Michael, then I told you about mum and you couldn't abandon me then like you wanted to, you had to fucking stay."
"Don't put words into my mouth Luke, you know full well I don't pity you!" Ashton yelled, he was hurt by the things Luke was saying, but the truth was terrible.
"It was fucking pity. I told you and it ruined your little get away plan, now we're back at school and 'you're in charge', you make the fucking rules so you can treat me like crap" Luke spat,
"Will you stop saying that, it's not fucking true!" Ashton yelled, his voice cracking slightly as he fell backwards into his chair, Luke walked over to him and looked him dead in the eyes,
"Then what is the truth, Ashton?"
"I, I..."
"What? Speak louder" Luke said keeping the stern tone to his voice,
"I, I kinda, I..."
"Speak louder!"
"I like you! I really like you okay? And I can't fucking help it!" Ashton yelled standing up, he was a few inches taller than Luke, but he knew Luke would end up taller than him.
"You, like me?" Luke said, stunned slightly,
"Yes, I like you, happy now?" Luke smiled a little, that was all he wanted to hear, "I really, really like you, but it's so wrong" Ashton said quietly as he stood inches away from Luke, "I could get you in so much trouble just by liking you" he whispered,
"I don't care" Luke said, "I really don't care"
