After making sure that Miss Umidore - she refused to call her Mara because connecting with someone when you were basically setting them up for a lifetime of imprisonment never turned out well - was safely in the guest room, Kahless sent a comm to the Council members. It was simple:

I have completed the mission you asked of me, and I would like to inform you of the results as soon as convenient. I also have in my custody the girl who was resistant to Urge's messages. It would be helpful if we could have a full Council meeting.

She was surprised that there was an immediate response. It was from Blacklight.

Please tell us what's going on. The suspense is killing me. Tomorrow morning would be a great meeting. And don't just go off on a whim again. Ever. But tell me... Who was the Sentinel?

Kahless smiled slightly at the message, so telling of Evander it should be put on his grave - not that she wished that on him. She typed a response quickly.

Tomorrow morning should be fine. Is 7:30 an acceptable time? And I don't think it would be safe to share the Sentinel's identity over comm band. And I can't promise not to go out on impulse again.

His reply was almost audibly disappointed.

Yes, I understand. But the suspense really is killing me about the Sentinel.

Kahless knew she needed to sleep after such a long night, so she typed a farewell message.

Of course.

---------

Kahless set her alarm early that morning. She didn't want to be late for Mara's assessment. When the annoying sound awoke her, she had barely slept at all.

Kahless opened her eyes and retrieved her communicator band from the nightstand. She had synced the security camera in Mara's room with her band, so she could record all that the girl did that night. She had sneakily placed a camera in the room when she had knocked on the wall, 'proving' it was soundproof.

She doubled the footage speed, so as not to bore herself. She watched Umidore look around and reach for the door. The girl was surprised when it was unlocked, but didn't open the door at all. Kahless frowned. It was exactly what she had done in the same situation, years ago. She had known she was in a prison of sorts, and it was no use trying to hide the fact from her. She had wanted to see the door lock's status, but known that there was no escape and it would be suspicious to attempt.

Kahless's frown deepened as she watched the girl go into the bathroom, closing the door, cutting off Kahless's view. She returned soon after. Miss Umidore sat down on the bed, her head in her hands. The tears started to fall. Why was I so stupid? Kahless had gotten better over the years at lip reading, and this was no exception. Eventually, the girl lay down on the bed and went to sleep, tears leaving stains on her face.

At this point, Kahless sped the video up to eleven times reality. Mara started to thrash in her sleep as if she were having a nightmare.

Kahless promised herself that she would learn more about this later. She switched to a current feed of the girl's room and found her sitting on the bed neatly, twirling her curly hair and swinging her legs. A small smile was on her lips and Kahless watched longingly. How could this girl find happiness so easily?

She went through the motions of her morning ritual. In five minutes she was knocking on the girl's door.

"I'll be right there," was the sweet-voiced response.

Kahless smiled against her will. This girl was too easy to love. Kahless had to remind herself that she could not get attached to the girl, or else she would have to live with the guilt of ruining her life.
