Mara and Narcissa broke apart from their embrace.

"I'm sorry," Narcissa sniffed. "This is taking up your time -"

"It's all right. I have nothing better to do. And I'm glad that you came to me. It's all right. You deserve time to collect yourself," Mara countered, hugging the girl again, this time tighter.

Those words brought on another, worse, fit of sobs. Mara rested her head on Narcissa's shoulder. She didn't say anything, having nothing that would remotely help the situation.

"I don't have anywhere to sleep, what with the library destroyed. I can't get food." Her voice was thick with emotion.

"Shh, Narcissa. You can sleep here. We have food. You're going to survive. You can go to the Cou -" She was about to say "the Council," but she realized that they would inevitably ask for Nightmare's identity. They couldn't risk that. "Scratch that. You can stay here. I'm all right with that."

"Is your father?" Narcissa asked, voice barely audible.

"I don't have to eat here anymore. I get my food at Renegade HQ. He doesn't have to provide for me anymore, and can then provide for you. He will be okay with you staying."

Narcissa buried her face in her hands. "I can't thank you enough, Mara. You're such an amazing friend... Thank you so much."

"Anytime, Narcissa."

They sat in silence, curled around each other, for the next few hours. They didn't bother to wipe their faces. It wasn't worth it, anyway. They'd only get tear-stained again.

"Why did he deserve to die? He tried so hard to survive... And this is what happens. It's not fair."

"I know."
