Kahless was called to the Council to watch the meeting with Adrian's team. She took her position in the shadows behind Thunderbird's chair and watched the meeting.
Everything was going smoothly. The Council was scolding the team for their not calling reinforcements, and the team was taking the words respectfully. Kahless kept her unreachable composure until Thunderbird said, "We have to follow our own rules because otherwise, we'd be just as bad as the Anarchists."
Kahless saw Nova's face take on the slightest hint of a smirk. "Because that would be terrible."
Barely holding in a grin, Kahless cursed in her head. Now how was she supposed to defend Nova's words?
She couldn't help but think it had been worth it, though.
"What was that, Miss McLain?" Thunderbird asked.
"Oh, just agreeing with you. Laws, order, rules. All sounds very authoritarian."
Why was this girl so funny?
The Council looked suspicious, but let the offense slide. They had bigger problems to deal with.
The meeting continued uneventfully, although Kahless's cursed mind kept running through Nova's outburst again. It was infuriating, but it was better than thinking about her mother all the time.
The final verdict was that the team be on probation for three days and then go back on duty with a warning and no hope of another mission like the library one. It was frankly a light sentence seeing as they did so much damage at the library, reputation-wise as well as physically. Adrian had also asked to interrogate the Puppeteer, and he was granted permission.
"Miss Loen, please come forward," Captain Chromium ordered politely after the team had left. Ordered, because there was no room for argument.
Kahless stepped to the middle of the room.
"Did you notice anything interesting this meeting?" Tsunami asked, as usual.
"Miss McLain looks to not completely believe in the practices of your government, but I don't think there is cause for action. Adrian Everheart - the Sentinel - is on her team, and if she attacks, he has the power to stop her. Besides, it would be poor for our reputation to dismiss her just because she made one comment." Kahless was trying to keep Nova in the Renegades because she wanted to help the Anarchists. The least she could do was not give up the identity of their greatest spy.
The Council seemed to contemplate for a moment. "That's reasonable, just you should keep an eye on them too. That is until we give you another task," Blacklight announced. "Also, you should watch the interrogation, just to have a record of it that's three-dimensional."
"I will oblige," great "Council."

"They noticed your comment, Nova," Kahless told her.
"I know. It was worth it, though," Nova replied, smirking.
Kahless smiled sadly. "It was funny, but please don't do that again."
"I won't," Nova promised.

Kahless felt like she should visit Mara someday soon. She hadn't been showing up to HQ since the library incident. She was probably comforting Narcissa wherever they were.
Kahless made the decision to go to Mara's house and see what was happening to her.
She donned a light jacket with a hood that covered her hair and the Renegade logo. She didn't need people recognizing her now. Kahless slipped through the revolving doors as silently as possible and started making her way through the streets. There weren't many crowds this time in the afternoon because most people were at work or inside their homes. The scars of the Age of Anarchy still lingered on people's conscience in that way.
