The awkward scenario in Mr Todd's class continued in everyclass and so happened lunch was even worse. Which was expected - the entire grade being in one room. You know what doesn't help trying to blend in? Being the only black person doesn't help. I mean like come on, did they ward off every black person to step foot inside the school building or community?
I have stage fright, so you kind of know how uncomfortable I felt with people staring at me. Having someone stare at you, giving you looks is first of all, rude. I mean, did their parents not teach them it's rude to stare at a person? Second of all, gives off the wrong impression to and from.
It makes me feel unwanted, which I probably am. But, I had Zach to scare them off.
Now, I seem to understand what he meant by being my 'Protector.' We don't have all of our classes together, only two or three, but he's always at the door, waiting for me to finish class.
Which also draws more stares. They probably look at him weird because he was associating with a black person, but he didn't really have choice. He's stuck with me for a week. Yay for him. He didn't seem to mind, though, but I'm sure he does.
Currently, I am in the cafeteria. The awful cafeteria food smell wafts all around the room, making me want to puke. I sighed, I knew I should have brought lunch. I was too nervous to eat the delicious looking pancakes my mom made this morning, and I am starving. I have been in here for the past ten minutes and no one has yet to look away from me. I spotted an empty table in the corner of the cafeteria and decided to sit there, alone. I told Zach that it was okay for him to go and sit with his friends outside and leave me here.
That was a mistake.
The cafeteria had the same plain walls as the rest of this building, making the room look even more dull with its grey tables. There are posters of the mascot on the wall and news, such as upcoming events happening in the school building. There were also posters of eating healthy and fitness and all that jazz.
I sighed again and rummaged through my book bag to try and find the book I was reading.
I forgot it. Great.
I sighed yet again - I've been doing that a lot lately. I zipped up my book bag and decided to go look for the library on my own. I remembered Zach telling me there was one somewhere in here. I felt every pair of eyes follow me all the way out of the cafeteria.
Once I closed the blue doors, I let out a deep breath and leaned against it for a moment. I ran a hand through my hair and finally pushed myself off.
I set out on a journey to find the library. I took the flight of stairs that took me to the second floor and it was a lot of walking since the cafeteria was in the basement. I looked around the floor and spotted the gym instead. I puffed my cheeks and checked the clock above the doorway of one of the classes on the floor. 11:02, it read. I have about half an hour before lunch is over. I nodded to myself and started down the hallway to look for another staircase.
"Hey!" I continued to walk, unsure if the person was talking to me or not."Hey, I'm talking to you new kid!"
For me, it is. I stopped and slowly turned around on the heels of my feet.
It was a girl. She was wearing a green T-shirt under a black vest, matching with dark washed jeans, and black flats. She had long brown hair and brown eyes. She had a pale complexion and was wearing a big smile on her face. "Hi, I'm Dorothy."
I grinned, "I'm - "
"Aliyah," she finished with a nod. "I know, everyone knows, actually. Your kind of famous here."
