I sat bolt upright in my bed as a small scream escaped my lips. I sat in the darkness as I slowed my breathing, tears threatening to pour down my face. I wouldn’t let them win again; I had cried too much because of it and I was over all of the tears. I knew it was stupid to think that I could have a good night’s rest. That’s the whole reason I don’t have a roommate, the nightmares.
I looked at the small alarm clock on my bedside table and saw that it was only 2:00 in the morning. I quickly turned on the lights since I’m scared of the dark. Yeah, I know a 19 year old that’s still scared of the dark ha, ha, ha… not funny. I grabbed some paper, a few Pokémon cards, and set to work at my desk. When I turned 18 I came over to Australia and enrolled in a drawing university. Why Australia? Where else could you go to get away from people you know other than Iceland?
By the time I was happy with two of my drawings it was time for me to get ready for the day. I picked out a pair of acid washed jean shorts and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crop top, took a short shower, and got all of my assignments ready. I only had three classes today, so it wouldn’t be that bad. I threw what I needed in my Pikachu bag and grabbed my phone. I put on my high tops and started walking to the campus Starbucks with 5 Seconds of Summer blasting through my headphones.
When I got to Starbucks there was only one other person in the small shop and it was one of the Professors. All I had to do was walk in and sit down since they all knew my order. Lydia came to give me my coffee a few minutes later. She’s one of the few people that don’t treat me like a freak. “Here’s your usual, Savannah,” she said as I took the coffee, "and here’s an early birthday present."
I looked at her silently asking what she meant. She laughed and pulled a long thin strip of paper out of her pocket. “Thanks,” I kind of asked as I took the piece of paper. I read over it and jumped up screaming. “A ticket to the 5sos concert! How?”
“I entered the wrong radio contest and remembered that you liked them,” she laughed.
“Oh my gar! Thank you so much. You are the best!” I almost tackled her in a bear hug.
“Alright, now get going or you’ll be late for English." I laughed. She was always thinking like a mother!
I just about ran to my English class. I walked in and sat in my usual seat in the back while everyone finished their reports that were due today. I had finished mine two days ago, so I decided to doodle a bit. I got lost in my drawing and the next thing I knew Professor Dantien had slapped a ruler down on my desk. He was the typical college Professor, old and grumpy. I hated him and he hated me. “I will ask one more time Ms. Lowie, do you even have your report?”
“Yes, I do, and it’s Lowe,” I said as I fished my report out of my bag. I made sure to drag out and put more emphasis on the ‘W’. “I finished it two days ago.”
He read over it with a scowl before snorting. “You couldn’t be bothered to write in cursive?”
“Mr. Dantien, do you really think that the person who has told you numerous times that she can’t read cursive would write a simple report in cursive?”
“I would have hopped a year of ridicule would have made you want to learn.” He then proceeded to the front of the class to give his lesson. After barely living through his class I stayed awake through math and thrived in cartoon style drawing.
I got back to my dorm room and read over the ticket. The concert was tomorrow at 8:00, so I only had to live through one more day before getting to see my idols in person!
