Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice."
And isn't it ironic, l don't you think It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought, it figures Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your faceA traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think
A little too ironic, and yeah I really do think - Alanis Morissette
Music was ringing loudly throughout the entire auditorium as it was announced that you finally won your first Grammy for Dystopia. I could not have been prouder as you and the band went on stage to receive your first major award from the music industry. I sat back in the seat as you went up to thank those who have supported you and have helped you along through the years. Surprisingly, I was included there as well. It was a nice night, and you couldn't feel any better.
Throughout the years we have reconciled our relationship, but we decided it would be best to just keep it civil and friendly for the kids, but not be romantically involved. This was much to your dismay, but you finally learned and accepted that you just had to let things go at some point. One of those things included me. Even though we were always a part at times like these you would invite me to an awards ceremony, and the same goes for me vice versa. It was friendly. You finally signed the divorce papers a few months after we reconciled. It never stepped out of bounds and we knew which lines we couldn't cross with each other. This was what was necessary for us all along. Still to this day we never remarried due to these feeling of endearment, but we would never cross the lines and barriers that we set for each other. It just wouldn't be right.
It was clear that you and I still had feelings for each other, but we never acted on them due to the fact it would ruin our relationship. However, our happiness around each other was genuine. Whenever, we went to a cook out or to a small gig the kids were involved in we acted like regular normal parents. Sure, you can say it was a broken and a dysfunctional home, but it was a loving one nonetheless. Justis and Electra understood this and never really questioned it. They were mature enough to understand our predicament and our relationship status and were complacent and content with it. And in all honesty it truly was better this was. We finally got to peacefully coexist with each other with no strings attached.
Once you came off stage you gently embraced me and I only hugged you back congratulating you on your long due well deserved win. I felt a sort of pride for you even though it wasn't me taking home the win. I was happy, and so were you. Sure, we weren't the perfect American family (hell we still aren't), but our dysfunctional lifestyle was and is what made us compatible. Even is it is only platonic love now our love and adoration for each other still exists. However, now a certain deeper level of respect is found between us now.
Our work was one of the factors that drove us a part to begin with. It was either you touring or me in some foreign country filming. We were workaholics and slaves to the grind, but now we didn't have each other getting in each others way. That left us to use our own creative abilities without hindering ourselves and others around us.
The rest of that night was just filled with cheerfulness and light amounts of drinking. The rest of the Megadeth gang was there too. Dave was there with his wife, and your new members, Kirk and Chris, with there respective family members as well. I've never felt nor seen you so genuinely happy like this in a long time. You would later tell me that this was the happiest you've ever been in a while.
After the afterparty was over you decided that you would drive me back to my hotel for the night and take me back to the airport tomorrow since we were both very far away from our homes. You lived on the lower east coast while I still inhabited Washington state in Olympia. We are still polar opposites, but you couldn't help but see how ironic the whole thing was.
After you dropped me off in my hotel I couldn't help but slightly smile in response to the relationship that has blossomed between us after the ashes of our marriage were finally swept away by the wind.
I woke up early due to my flight leaving at around 7 A.M. in the morning. I was greeted by you as you greeted me with a hug and helped me with my luggage into the car you rented out for our short lived visit and meet up in California for the award ceremony.
As you drove me to the airport the trip was nothing but silent. However, unlike before the tension that was always present in the air between us didn't exist. Once you got me to the gate at the airport you helped me out of the car and pulled my baggage out of the trunk. For a few moments we hugged, but as we embraced a warmth filled both of our bodies as we looked back at our lives and was and what could've been. Yet despite everything we both agreed that this was the best decision for us all.
As you gently kissed me on my cheek goodbye I turned away and made my way through the section of the airport to the growing line that was in front of me.
I finally made my way onto the plane I was looking out the window as the ground began to fade away and turn into tiny specks that would soon disappear from my vision. I thought back to you and how at ease you and I finally were. I chuckled to myself reminiscing on the past that was forever behind us and the future that would be shortly and will surely be closing in on the both of us. Life has a funny way of helping you out when you think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up in your face. Life sure has had a funny way of sneaking up on us and helping us out, but in the end of the day this was always our lives. How funny is it that we found comfort in each other only to find out that our lives would be better once we left each other. Who would've thought? Well, I guess it only figures, right, Mr. Play It Safe. Isn't it ironic?
