It was a sunny day, and Shadow and I were trotting along a dirt road in a field, enjoying the heat of the sun, the buzzing of the bees, the permeating scent of grass and pollen, and the distant whoosh of a river.

We reached a patch of stamped down ground, and I decided to settle there for a short break. I wiped sweat off my forehead with my clothy wristband, spreading out my blanket over the ground. I settled heavily on the blanket, happy to be out of the saddle for a while, and offered Shadow a drink before having one myself. After a bit of rest I unwrapped a package containing some beef turkey, crackers, cheese and grapes. I munched slowly, offering Shadow a red apple, which he ate with a zealous appetite.

I sighed, looking around me, noting the clear blue of the sky, the sound of a distant tractor working the fields, the scent of my food, along with horse. A slight breeze lifted my hair, cooling the hot skin on my neck. I pondered idly why humanity had ever decided to replace such spectacular, peaceful nature with the grey minimalism of cities. I lay down on my back, hands folded over my stomach, and I wondered no more.
