(22nd June 2018)Ali's pov
"I don't even remember the last time we were here" Hanna giggles, placing the picnic basket on the sand in front of the lake
"I never thought we would come back here. It always reminded me of Ali's death too much to ever want to come back, and now here we are, with our children and Alison" Aria smiles
"Ali's death?" Lily asks
"It was a popular song when we were younger" Hanna lies
"Kids stay away from the water" Toby shouts as Abigail, Harper and Zoë splash their hands against the clear water
"Why daddy?" Abigail asks
"Because might fall in and die" Toby bluntly tells his three year old daughter
"That's immortality my darlings" Spencer quietly giggles, looking towards me
"Don't say that Spencer, that's gruesome" I laugh
Our children and the boys stare in deep confusion as we all burst into a fit of hysterical laughter. Reminiscing that days conversation
"What?" Ezra asks
"You don't know? I thought that would've been a whole chapter in your book" Hanna giggles
"Are you ever going to drop that? I'm sorry" Ezra awkwardly sighs, drawing squiggles in the sand beside him with his finger
"They know. It's just funny now" Aria explains, giving him a reassuring smile
Emily's pov
We watch in amazement of the contrast between the last time the 5 of us were here together to now. Mesmerised in the sandcastle in which our children are building; Toby, Caleb and Ezra stand around the bbq just as Jenna and her friends did that day. That day when Jenna could still see, when we talked about life and death, that day when Alison made fun of as many people as she could, when Alison and I snuck off to the kissing rock. That "perfect" day.
The so called "adults" sit on the beach chairs we brought and our children kneel on the sand; burying Lily up to her neck in it. I look over to Alison cautiously watching every movement of her body, analysing her reaction to our daughter being buried in the sand; a few years ago Alison would have had a mental breakdown due to her ptsd, she would have pulled Lily straight out of the sand and we would've gone home. However, she doesn't even flinch, instead she turns away and joins Spencer and Aria's conversation.
Alison's stare moves away from our friends and she looks deeply into the distance of the woods, which lead to the kissing rock.
Ali's pov
We sat at the lakes, watching as people drove remote controlled boats around the lake and laughed with their friends. We all sat in seats beside Spencer who was lying on a towel in her black bikini. My seat was higher than everyone else's as I pretended to be the queen bee of both my group and the whole lake.
"I wish we could just choose the age that we wanted to be and just stay there" Aria told us
"The only way to do that is to die young, leave a beautiful corpse" I smiled
"Don't joke" Emily innocently told me
"It's not a joke" I admitted, looking at Emily's saddened hazel eyes
"Oh, come on. Haven't you guys ever thought about how deliciously tragic it would be to die in some incredibly mysterious way? That would be superior" I smiled, unaware that soon I would "die" in a superior way; unaware that I would be buried alive
"Is that really how you want to go Alison?" Spencer asked in disbelief
"Not just yet" I smiled, shrugging my shoulders
"Don't talk like that" Hanna complained, tugging at the ends of the sleeve of her blue sweater - which she wore to cover her body in an attempt to hide "hefty Hanna"
"It's gruesome" Aria added
"It's not gruesome" I paused, before continuing with a smirk "It's immortality, my darlings"
My friends shared awkward looks between each other as I continued to smile at my comment. I didn't hear it from a movie as Spencer thought; I made it up and I was so proud of it. It wasn't until I was lying underground, watching as my mom threw dirt on top of me that I realised that dying young was not immortality.
"God, Jenna the jerk is looking at us" I snarled as Jenna's stare ruined my proud moment
As people say hindsight is a beautiful thing; because both my friends and I were unaware that soon Jenna wouldn't be able to look at anything, nevertheless stare at us
"It's a very second-string crowd she's with" Aria said tilting her head as we watched Jenna
"Why doesn't she just take her "D"-list gang and go home instead of sitting here and creeping me out?" I giggled, looking out toward the pond. Whenever I made fun of people I preferred to look away from them. It made it easier, I felt less guilty.
"Jenna's here. Where's Toby?" Emily asked
"Out in the woods, sacrificing squirrels"
Despite wanting to look away whilst I created lies about Toby, I couldn't help but look into Emily's gorgeous brown eyes as I spoke
"God. Don't you ever get tired of shooting at the low-hanging fruit?" Spencer complained, sticking up for her future husband
"Don't ruin a perfect day, Spencer" I bitchily remarked, lifting my head up to the sun
"It is perfect" Hanna smiled
"Friends forever"
"Yeah. Even when we get really old" Spence smirked, unable to maintain her mood with me
After successfully making fun of Jenna, Noel, Prudence, Aria, Lucas and Hanna: Aria, Hanna and Spencer left to get food, leaving Emily and I alone
"There go Noel and Prudence off to the Kissing Rock" I smiled, looking over to Emily to make sure I got her attention
"People have been sneaking off to the Kissing Rock for hundreds of years" I continued as I cautiously watching for Em's reaction
"You're making that up" she sighed with laughter, sweetly smiling at me before looking back to Noel and Prudence
"Just because I make it up doesn't mean it's not true" I told Emily, not taking my eyes off of her as she continued to wrap her red towel around her arms
"You go there with somebody and you can feel the ghosts of the other lovers spying on you, pushing you to do it" I continued to lie, leaning closer and closer to Emily, watching as the color of her cheeks deepened in a blush
"You know, you should never disappoint a ghost" I flirted, waiting for her reaction
"It's just a dusty old rock" she giggled, nervously shifting her stare between Noel and I
"Who do you want to take there?"
