you were the fuel
that ignited the fire
you were the ocean
that forced me back to shore.
you were the feeling of:
i'm going to live forever.
we once ate vinegar chips until
they crisped the edges of our lips,
we talked late into the night until i
watched your words float off like nightingales.
we did things that hurt because we believed that we had to.
i have tattooed your name on my skin
since you forced me to wear it each day.
it's nothing to be ashamed of.
one day, you'll be proud.
i promise.
i tied you in my hair
i wrote you in every poem
i played you in every melody,
and i chewed you into my diastema.
your anger reminded me of terrence fletcher
you played your heart and you felt the pain
you smashed a cymbal into the left side of my brain.
it never got easy,
but it got easier.
there was a butterfly hiding in your palms,
accompanying your honey fingers
and lips that smelt like licorice.
i asked you once
if you were satisfied with yourself.
the silence drew in and your breath grew ragged.
you spit out your medicine until your brain disintegrated
and you said you were fine,
because you knew that when the time to die would come
you would only wake up
and you would have time enough
to complete everything you once
could not.
