Immediately After Victoria Left

I tried to remember their argument as much as I could. The entire history of the war between vampires and werewolves, everything.

"I've got to write this all down." I scrambled looking for a piece of paper.

"Here, your phone." Jacob grabbed my phone and held it out to me. "Write it down."

"Books can't be hacked into, and it's easier to hide a book than it is to hide a computer. Also, books don't die." I grabbed onto an empty school notebook and a loose number two pencil. I sat down on my chair making it almost fall over.

"Tell it to me again. What abilities do vampires have?"

Jacob sat down on the couch behind me and began listing. "You know about the fangs and the bloodsucking." Jacob leaned forward and grabbed his hands together. "Their manipulation is the worst part."

"They're manipulative?"

"No," his body posture completely changed from jovial to serious, "they can manipulate your mind. They take control, make you do things, say things, it's disgusting."

I turned my chair around. "Why don't they control the world?" My eyebrow twitched in fear.

"Us." Jacob blinked his eyes and they turned yellow.

I clenched my jaw. He was my best friend and seeing him like this was different than anything before.

"What started the war on vampires?" I turned the chair back around.

"They suck."

"Literally."

Jacob laughed, breaking the tension in the room. "The clan tells stories about the vampires and they've always just been the monsters under the bed for me."

"You have a pack, too?"

"Yeah, the strongest werewolf pack west of the Cascades. The Midnight Sun."

"Why is it called the Midnight Sun?"

"We were created to control the Blood Moon clan. They control the entire east coast."

I shook my head, "Sounds dangerous." I began writing everything down until my pencil broke. I stood up from my chair, having a sudden epiphany.

"What clan is Victoria in?"

"I don't know. That's something I'll have to look into."

"How would you even know what clan she's in?"

He pulled his shirt off his shoulder, and there was a mark that looked like a tattoo. I'd never seen it before. It was a circle with an eye inside but also lines like spokes coming out of it to show that it was a sun.

"Looks tribal," I remarked.

Jacob's eyes were yellow with a narrowed iris. "It is. Werewolf packs live much more 'primitive' lives than vampires. They have a queen or king controlling their clan with several lieutenants, but we have an alpha that we all must follow."

"So they're like a constitutional monarchy and you're more of a dictatorship?"

"I have no idea what either of those words means." Jacob admitted, confusedly.

"How did you get past freshman year?"

"I cheated off you, sophomore year as well." He laughed at me.

"Yeah, you should probably stop doing that."

He flicked my ear.

"Hey! Hey!" I shouted at him. I slapped his hands away from my head.
