How To Not Write A Story: Mirai Nikki

As a beginning note I would like to add, I don't quite remember everything from Mirai Nikki, as it has probably been years since I last watched it, so my knowledge on it is pretty rusty. So sorry for any mistakes.

Alright so like Fairy Tail, this is a show that I really like the setting and the background information for, I think that it has a really good plot which gives motivation to the characters, but the characters are absolute shit. Most of the make little to no sense whatsoever. This show proves to me even further that characters can easily make or break a story.

So first of let's get to the two main characters, Yuno and Yuki. Yuki, like most anime protagonists, is extremely bland and boring, like a self insert. Sure, I don't mind self insert characters, I mean all the things I read on this website are reader inserts after all, but Yuki just doesn't seem believable. For me, all the decisions he makes would never cross my mind. I know that not all self insert characters are gonna be like me, but they could at least try you know? But he makes decisions that most normal people wouldn't make, like literally hanging out with and engaging his stalker! All in all, he just doesn't feel realistic to me and seems to fit an annoying shoujo protagonist than one for a death game.

Like I have said in previous chapters, I absolutely love insane characters, which leads me to love yandere characters. However, Yuno Gasai is a shitty example for a yandere character. Sure she didn't have the best childhood, but her past doesn't seem too much like the type to make her as crazy as she is. Sure maybe a bit mentally unstable, but not chopping off a gay guy's head off cuz he likes your man. I don't see how people think she is the queen of yanderes, she's a pretty bad example of what one could do, and paints them to be pretty bland.

There are some examples of good character writing in Mirai Nikki, like Aru Akise. I personally liked his rational approach to things. He wouldn't do anything too rash that would make you question whether or not he is sane. Another good example is Minene, she's extravagant for sure, but it makes since with how she portrays herself. I mean she literally bombed a damn school in like the second episode! Personally I think Aru and Minene are the best characters in this series, and they earned that title.
