Why I Hate Fanfiction

Timeskips and OOCness

This is a really weird combination for topics, but I am going to make it work!

Simply put, I loathe time skips with all my being. Now this doesn't mean you're supposed to write every minute of a characters life, but if you blatantly put "Timeskip" in you fanfiction, you should rewrite it.

Timeskips can be good, if you don't abuse them and are not so forward with them. Like if you are writing a mystery, it's good to skip ahead so that the criminal can get something done. Or if the character is sleeping you can but "Then on the next day..." or "In the morning...". Just, don't shove timeskip in there for no reason other than you are too lazy to write a couple of words.

Now as you know from reading this rant book, I like to read yandere stories. Not a lot of them are fandom ones, because the stuff I like barely gets any good fanfiction out of it. But when I find a nicely written one, and it isn't a yandere fic, I expect the characters to at least be somewhat like themselves.

It feels like in most x reader fanfiction, or just any fanfiction, the characters bend over backwards for these boring ass characters that to them are perfect. Just because the reader or the oc share some interests with a character doesn't mean they are going to get married and have 7 kids. Most fandom fics feel like they could end more naturally in friendship, and there is nothing wrong with that!

Now of course if a character you are writing is not yours then I can understand them being OOC. I mean whenever I do roleplay it's usually with my own, shitty, oc because I am absolutely terrible at writing someone else's characters. There have been very few exceptions, but I am not in the fandom anymore, nor do I like them anymore.

The trick is to know the character like your own child. It'd help if you would find some things detailing personality and other things by the original creator, that way you have information straight from the source material.

Don't be so disheartened when the character you are writing is ooc, it takes a while to learn a character inside and out, and even a character you created yourself. I will probably say this for a long time, but practice does indeed make perfect. You won't get any better if you get discouraged at the sight of all criticism.
