Chapter 6
Avery's Point Of View
Monday
On Sunday, was Lydia's funeral and I didn't go. Well, I've been in bed the past few days because my body was too sore to do anything at all.
Today was soccer tryouts, their soccer coach wants to see me because Coach Carter recommended me. I used to play soccer with my family during the family outings and all.
But it stopped because my brothers have to go to the military and since then, we don't have a family outing at all.
In the girls locker room, I wait for the time to pass by. I took out my phone, debating if I should text Eugene. So I just type in 'Hi' in the box.
My thumb went over to the send button, I bite down my bottom lip. "Nah.." I mumbled. I made myself comfortable.
Then I look back at my phone, the message is sent.
How is the message sent?!
I think I pressed it on accident.
Holy crap.
'Who are you'
That was Eugene's reply.
"Evans!" I heard Isaac started.
'Avery? Is it Avery Evans?" That was his next message. "Time to go on the field." Isaac says to me, "okay, be right there." I put my phone in my locker and run to the field.
;
After soccer tryouts, I have to wait a few days 'cause the soccer coach, Coach Anderson have to decide if I could join or not.
And I'm not sure about joining the team. I took out my bag, and saw some messages from Eugene. "Oh look who is messaging you.." Isaac took my phone. "Isaac!" My heart pounded as he types.
"Aw Evans." Isaac pinches my cheeks, and pass my phone back to me. I look down at the message that Isaac sent.
'I like you.'
;
I step into school, watching a girl hugging Eugene tightly. And they kissed each other after that. This feeling in my chest or somewhere around the chest, it's killing me.
Ignore it, Avery. Ignore it.
It was close to lunch, and I can't wait to get the hell out of this school.
The bell ring and everybody rushed out of the classroom. I sit down at my usual place, my food tray on my table. "Hey Evans, saw you in soccer tryouts yesterday. You're so getting in the team." Sam says, sitting beside me.
"Hey, something wrong?" He asks, I stare at him. "You look kinda of pale." He says. I feel tears welling up, "yeah everything is fine." I say, chuckling nervously.
"Avery.. What's wrong?" He asks, his eyebrows furrowed with concern. I shook my head, putting my arms crossed on the table. I lay my head on it and a tear fell.
"Hey, what's going on?" Zach asks, joining us. "I don't know." Sam replies.
I am so stupid.
"Hey Avery." I heard Eugene's voice. "Get away from her." Sam says, growling at him. "What? What did I do?" Eugene asks, clearly confused.
"You made her cry." Sam says, ugh. This is so embarrassing. "But I didn't do anything." Eugene says, "she's crying?" Zach asks.
Tears were falling down my cheeks, "hey, hey, hey Avery." I felt Eugene's presence close to me because of his scent.
I recognize it.
Now it's just creepy.
"Was it the text?" He asks, his tone is soft and sounded concern. "I didn't sent it." I mumbled, "okay Avery, who sent it?" His hand was on my back. "Isaac."
;
I got into gym class, sharing the gym with the juniors. "Have you heard about Isaac getting beat up by Eugene?" Casey asks, sitting beside me.
"What?" I look up at her. "Eugene and Isaac got into a fight, and Eugene was the one who started it." She says.
"The fight was about you." She says, smiling. "That's so sweet of Eugene." She then says. "To be honest, I really, really like him." She confessed.
"The fight was about me?" I asks, ignoring her confession. "Yeah, that was what I heard." She shrugs, and we quickly join the class.
"Okay, there's some changes in the schedules so erh, we have a new classmate." Coach Carter says, looking down at his clipboard.
"Eugene Hunter." He says, Eugene walks in like a badass. We made eye contact, and obviously, I looked away.
Casey giggles when Eugene sit beside her. "Okay, we're going to play dodgeball again.. Next week, we will then start on hockey." Coach Carter says.
We got into our teams and Eugene joined mine even though Casey was dragging him to her team.
How can your crush like you back? That would just be ridiculous.
Coach Carter blow the whistle, and the opponents begin throwing balls at us. Sam was the first one to get out. Then a ball was coming straight at me, "Evans!" Someone shouted when I caught ball in my hands.
"And Casey is out!" Coach shouted, Casey left to the side of the court.
After a while, there was 4 people on the other side. Me and Eugene were the only ones standing. "Hunter, focus!" Then Eugene was on the floor.
;
Eugene's eyes flutter, he looks so peaceful when he slept. Coach Carter made me stay with him till his detention later. "Hey beautiful." He smiles at me.
Beautiful?
I bite my lip nervously, my heart pounding. Can he hear it? I fought back the blush and the smile coming up on my face, "hey.. How are you doing?" I asks.
"Great." He smiles, I got up from my seat and lean at the side as he gather his things. "What actually happened?" He asks. "Well, a ball hit you and that's it." I reply, shrugging.
"Ugh. I am such a whimp." He mutters, then silence fill the air. I grab my bag and follow him out. "So erh, what happened?" I asks, scratching the back of my head.
"The fight?" He asks, "yeah.." I nod slightly. "He's a fucking idiot." He mumbles, "why beat him up?" I asks.
He look down at his shoes, I stare at him, noticing the little freckles at the side of his face. It wasn't too obvious, you have to observe for a while before you noticed it.
"Because of you."
"Me?"
"Yeah you.." He smiles, "why?" I asks, curiously. He shrugs before answering, "because.. You're different." He smiles at me. "And as I said before, you're weird.. I like you." He says.
"Bye." He waves, going into the detention room.
What the hell is that suppose to mean?
