The leather seat of the car was soft and comfortable. I had my head pressed against the cold window. I knew that it would leave a big red mark, but I didn't really care all that much. My mom's favorite radio station played soft classical music. I sat there dozing, only wanting to get home after the opening of my school play.At some point I had started to stare blankly out of the car window. As I was doing this I caught a glimpse of something on the banks of the river next to the road. "Hey Mom, can you pull over?"
She looked at me strangely, but pulled the car over past the fog lines, towards the river. There standing next to the river was a young girl in a white dress with a blood red sash across her waist. Her glossy black hair was pulled back with a ribbon that matched her sash and upon her head was a crown of what looked like thorns. In her hand was a single, white rose.
"Are you lost?" I asked after I rolled down my window
She looked at me with blank, cold eyes. "I'm looking for my Mummy. Are you my Mummy?" The voice sent shivers down my spine, but I couldn't tell why.
I turned to my own mom and asked "Can we help her find her own mom?"
My mom shrugged. "I really don't see why not. We don't have any certain time that we have to be home" Before she was even done talking, I opened my door and pulled the girl onto my lap. I closed my door and signaled for my mom to start driving again.
"So, where do you live?" My mom asked so she could get a feeling she was going. The small girl didn't reply, because she looked to be asleep. My mom shrugged her shoulders again. "I suppose we will just take her home and call the police to see if anyone has reported her missing." I nodded.
We drove for another ten minutes with basically nothing happening. Then the radio began to freak out. The station that had my mom's music on it, changed to static. "We must have lost the signal." I said as I fiddled with the knobs.
"Mummy? Are you my mummy?" I looked down at the girl in my lap, my heart pounding. Her eyes were still closed and she wasn't talking. Where did that voice come from?
The radio. That's where the voice came from. Right when I realized this, the weight of the little girl on my lap disappeared. So did my mom. The car swerved and I screamed as loud as I could and, with my fumbling fingers, I opened my car door. I jumped out of the doomed car just in time to watch it sink into the river.
After that it didn't take long for the ambulances and police to arrive. I had no clue how they knew that something happened here, but they did. When the paramedics told me that I was going into shock –which was right- I decided that I wouldn't tell about the little girl. Everyone would think that I was crazy, and I just wanted to live as normal life as I could. And that's what I did. It was hard, and took a long time, but I live my life and the years passed. But every time I see that river, I swear that I still see that little girl.
