"Damnit." I heat Fitz curse. I slide down the wall and sit on the floor. Fitz does the same. I receive another email. I decide to silence the students and read it to them. The power is out. Emergency generators should kick in within the next 30 minutes. Please remain calm. The threat has been eliminated, police are with suspect and the bomb has been defused.
"There was a bomb?" One girl says.
"Code Black." I say.I see students on their phones, Snapchatting and Instagramming the entire scenario. I sit on the ground and talk with Fitz.
"How the hell do we have two emergencies in one day?" I ask.
"I think this place is cursed." He mutters."I feel like the power had been out a while. When did you get that email?" He asks. I pull it up on my phone.
"1 hour ago." I say. He looks over to me.
"Why aren't the emergency generators on yet?" He whispers.
"I don't know, let me call the front office." I say."Hello?" The voice answers.
"It's been a hour, why aren't the generators on yet?" I ask.
"They broke during the storm last year and there has not been a chance to fix them. Please do not inform your students. Power will be back on." She says.
"And when exactly?" I ask.
"Hopefully soon. If it is not fixed before 6, it will probably won't be fixed until the morning." She says and hangs up. I whisper to Fitz."It's 5:25." He says.
"I noticed." I whisper.I lean onto his shoulder. He puts his arm around me. I don't care what the kids see. It's dark anyway. I feel his hand on my ribs, just below my bra line. I try not to think anything of it.
I check my phone at 5:55. Still no power. I stand up and walk to the window and pray that there will be trucks sitting outside. Instead, I see a large tree on top of a power line. And a pole, on the opposite side, on the ground. I shake my head at Fitz.
"It's unlikely," I say, "That the power will be fixed before the morning. Get comfortable and I really hope you don't have to pee." I hear a couple sighs. Then, multiple of my students call their parents.
"This is ridiculous," Fitz mutters to me.
"Agreed." I say. Most of the students talk to each other. I sit with Fitz.
"I just realized something." I say.
"What?"
"All of my bridesmaids are lesbians..." I say.
"Really?"
"Courtney, Devin and Lola are my bridesmaids. All of them are gay." I say.
"Hm." Fitz says.
"Wait, who are your groomsmen?" I ask.
"Marx is my best man. Rob and James, my old roommates and my brother are my other groomsmen." He says.
"Oh okay." I say.
"Sometimes, I have to look down at your ring and make sure it's actually on you," He says.
"Why, did you think I'd have lost it?" I ask.
"No. Because I want to make sure I hadn't made this all up in my hand. You're too perfect. I need to make sure this isn't a dream." He says.
"A dream? We're sitting on the floor of my classroom with no electricity, no bathroom and 26 high school students," I say.
"I could have been alone in my classroom, so I'm pretty happy." He says. He reaches for my hand. "You're really cold." He says.
"Yeah. It's kinda cold in here." I say. He takes off his sweatshirt. "Oh-you don't have to..." I say but he places it in my lap. I slip on the sweatshirt.
"I know another way..." He says. He leans into give me a kiss.
"Fitz—no." I say. He pulls back.
"Sorry.""I'm about to pee my pants," A girl says. I look at her with sympathy.
"Just pee in a water bottle," Says a guy.
"Not possible for girls," I say.
"Right..." Says the guy."Wait." I say. They all look at me. I walk towards the window. It slides up, not problems. Just the screen was left in my way.
"Fitz. Come punch the window." I say.
"What?"
"Punch through the screen." I say.He swings back and his hand reaches right through the screen.
"Yes!"
I pull on the screen with the help of Fitz we make a small hole in the window. Only one small problem, we're 9 feet from the ground.
"Damnit. It's too high." I say. Fitz looks me in the eyes.
"Do you trust me?" He asks. I do.
"Yes." I say.
"Let me get you down there. I need someone strong to hold my feet." He says. One of the football players crouches down and keeps his feet steady on the ground.Fitz has me sit on the window's edge. He grabs me by the armpits and dangles me down.
"You ready?" He asks when I'm about a foot from the ground.
"Go ahead." I say. He drops me and I fall. I hit the ground on my feet, but in a crouch.
"Gray, you good?" He asks.
"Yep! Send the next one down." I say.We pass student after student. He gets them as far as he can and I help them down the rest of the way.
"He's totally into me." I hear a girl say.
"You? He touched my boob, not yours..." The other says.
"He touched both of mine," She argues.
"Shut up you two! His fiancé is right there." I hear a third say. So they're talking about Fitz. And now me. Great.
"That's just a rumor." I hear one say.Kid by kid most of my class is lowered down. The last student out was the football player who Fitz had hold down his feet. Finally, Fitz slides through the window. He grips the edge of the window and lowers himself with pure strength. He lands on the ground as gracefully as I did.
"Oh my god we're out!" I say.
"We're out!" He says.I jump into his arms. He picks me up and spins me around. He stops and plants a kiss on my lips. I kiss him back.
"I guess they are engaged..." A girl says. I push off Fitz.
"What the hell?" He says. I refer back to the crowd of students standing around, looking at us.
"Kids!" I say.
"We're engaged!" He says.
"So?"
"They know engaged people kiss all the time." He says.
"Oh hell with it. Half of them have seen us kiss before." I say and throw myself back on him. He slips his hand up my shirt. I pull back.
"We should probably wait until we're in my car..." He says.
"Yeah.."
