Chapter 32

Newt POV

I can't control my anger. I can hear voices on the other side of the thick, glass wall. "LET ME OUT!" I scream at the top of my lungs and see Jakie walk into the cell.

She looks completely broken and I want to console her but I don't want her getting hurt.

"I have to do this," She mumbles under her breath and sits down on the floor criss-cross-applesauce.

"Do what?" I ask finally controlling my anger as I sit down next to her.

"I have to," She repeats and leans in so I think she's gonna kiss me. Suddenly, I see a glint of something metal and feel a prick as the liquid from the syringe makes its way into my bloodstream.

The last thing I see before I blackout is Jakie standing up and rushing out of my cell. She closes the doors behind her and there's a whoosh as she goes back into freedom.

Jakie POV

I can't believe I just did that! I injected Newt with the serum that will temporarily cure him of this Crank disease that he got when he was in the Maze or just after.

"Hey... It's okay..." Peter coaxes and envelopes me into his embrace with his chin on my head and his arms wrapped around me protectively. "I'm here... It's okay..."

"Thank you," I mumble into his chest and he picks me up over his shoulder and leads me out of the room. We make our way up to the couch and just sit down, cuddling.

We see Newt come up from the basement flanked by Thomas, Minho, and Brenda. Emily comes up soon after and we all huddle in the living room, awaiting our next moves.

"We have to go... We need as much time as we can to get him to the Cure," Brenda announces.

"I'm coming." I volunteer Brenda looks at me dumbstruck.

"Are you sure? It's a long and dangerous journey." She adds.

"Nothing I haven't been told before. Anyway who is gonna keep this guy in check if the serum runs out." I argue.

"Alright, so... That makes Minho, me, Brenda, and Jakie... " Thomas asks.

"Nope," Peter says for everyone and we pile into a metal truck. "If you're going, then I'm going." He says looking at me.

"Peter, you need to stay here..." I say jumping down from the metal truck and pulling him aside so we can have a private conversation.

"But--" He starts.

"You once told me you had an obligation to protect this city... Queens needs you... So protect it." I order, Peter sighs.

"No. You're not going without me!" He whisper-yells.

"Peter please--" I am cut off by a pair of soft, comforting lips. I kiss him back and wrap my arms around his neck, as he wraps his arms around my waist. I break the kiss looking into his warm brown eyes and sigh.

"Ugh... I hate it when you do that!" I laugh and he chuckles holding my face in his hands.

"Okay..."I give in and he smiles brightly. I giggle before we walk back to the others.

"He's gonna tag along," I say.

"The more the merrier." Minho snickers.

We hop in the back of the metal truck sitting in the back on the benches, Brenda drives us to wherever we're going.

After hours of quietly sitting and being jostled by the bumpy roads, the truck stops and we all fly off the benches and onto the floor.
