No one knows what caused the war.  Some say it was because one country was getting too strong.  Others say it was because God hated us. Still others said it happened because the government wanted those that opposed them destroyed.  Whatever caused it, the world had changed.  Out of the billions of people on the earth, less than 3 million survived.  That is less than the population of the ancient world.

Animals and people changed from the radiation that was left over by the weapons.  Animals mutated till you couldn't tell what they used to be.  Humans changed even more.  Radiation changes people in ways you never imagined.  Skin changed colors, hair came alive, eyes grew weird and freaky looking.   Some grew wings, others gills and still others grew fangs.

Those early years were horrible.  Mass panic and extinction followed.  Those that survived the war died by the thousands from hunger, radiation, and crime.  Only the strong survived.  Colonies were set up and people managed to adapt.

The one curious thing that happened was that every building was destroyed; every single one except for those built by the early civilizations that had once populated the world.  They survived while the newer building crumbled.  These places became a magnet for those who survived.  The old religions were brought back and some new ones crept up.  This is the story of those who survived.
