August made a checklist.
As soon as William had left, a week later from the day he'd finally came back, August decided to make a checklist. The first thing on her to-do list was get enough money to support herself and the rest of her two months of pregnancy. She needed a least two thousand dollars to start off with seeing as New York wasn't cheap. She could use homeless shelters to keep her safe and the money to buy small things such as food, blankets and water.
The next thing on her to-do list was find a decently cheap place to stay, she had been a couple of apartments for nine hundred a month but that was as cheap as it went.
The neighborhoods would already be bad enough and unsafe so finding anything under that would put her and her child in a bad situation she wouldn't be able to get out of.
Last on her to-do list was pack her stuff and leave. She wasn't going to leave a note nor was she going to take anything that wasn't necessary with her. For the past four years William has been her anchor, he bought and supplied everything that she needed. He was rich after all. But August wanted to do this on her own, no help from anyone but herself and hopefully her father seeing as her mother shipped Christina's and Williams relationship.
August was just an add on to the power couple which only made August more bitter. She knew she had to end things with him, she has changed in the last four years that they have been lovers. She use to be a book worm, never letting go of a good fantasy. She use to love large oversized sweaters with ugly animal designs sown into the front. She liked hot chocolate on a hot summers day and didn't care that people judged her messy hair. She liked to go to carnivals and fairs, staying out all night winning stuffed animals and eating funnel cake.
All of that stopped when William started to dictate her life. She couldn't do this, that and the other without him judging, she had to eat a certain type of food with a certain fork. She couldn't go out unless she told him and she couldn't talk to him or show emotions towards him in front of their friends.
It was horrible to say the least.
Both of their families were connected. August's mom, Cheryl, has known Williams mom since they were babies and Williams mother has known Christina since she was a tiny child. The group would occasionally go out to dinner, a theme park and sometimes a movie but August had never been invited when it came to those occasions. Cheryl had high hopes that if she didn't invite August, that people would forget about her. Cheryl wanted to keep August to herself, in a tight bubble that no one can penetrate because she'd already lost three children and she didn't want to lose another.
Now years later it was only a coincidence when William stumbled upon August, curled up and reading a good book. August didn't succumb to his charms no matter how giddy he made her felt but after many months of wooing, he finally got into her pants. She knew that he was married long before she knew who he was. Her mother talked about them and the wedding — that August hadn't been invited to — all the time. She gushed about how 'perfect' the couple was.
August sighed bringing herself back to reality. She didn't want to rehash the last five years she spent with William, wasted, and the last four that were used as his sex toy. His game. His whore.
That's all she was to him, his whore.
"Money, food and a possible apartment, check" August looked at the bare apartment before her. It held no life, unlike her old apartment and that only made her a little mad.
She has changed over the years, she could see that now.
Grabbing all three of her stuffed duffle bags, August made her way to the door. She stopped just as her hand twisted the knob, she turned back to the apartment. "No turning back, no regrets. I'll give Sophia to my mother until I can make enough money to support us both, until I can get over the fact that she was made by mistake."
The door opened and closed behind August, leaving an empty and lifeless apartment, even more empty.
