Living in Manhattan New York meant rich people were everywhere but that also meant they only talked to you when you had gossip. August used her status as a way to get out of her building, past many security guards and down to Manhattans streets.

Since hardly anyone knew her, it only made her job easier. The security guards only knew her as Williams whore at first but after many attempts to get to know them, they gave in and realized that she was a good person in a bad relationship. That was the only thing that stopped them from from doing their job in keeping her inside her apartment. She didn't tell them where she was going nor did they asked, as soon as they'd seen the suitcase clutched within her hands it as was if they were blind to what she was doing.

"Where to miss?" August sighed settling into the backseat of the cab she'd called a few minutes prior to her departure. She pulled out a piece of paper stuffed into her coat pocket and handed it to the man who took it. The address was of a women's homeless shelter advertised towards women with children and those seeking salvation from their controlling relationship. She'd applied for a room a few days ago and had received a letter of acceptance yesterday afternoon. This would be her temporary home until the apartment she wanted could become available.

When August arrived outside of the homeless shelter, she quickly grabbed her bags, paid and walked inside.

"August Winters" she told the receptionist. The lady handed August a sign in sheet with a small booklet of rules. "Be advised that the doors close and lock at 9pm weekdays and 11pm on weekends. If you arrive past those times you will not be allowed back in until 6am the next morning." The lady spoke as she went to grab Augusts's keys. August made a mental note in her head to find a job within those hours.

"You get a meal card each week for seven meals. We are government funded which means we only have a certain amount of money to spend before it's used up so if you want more meals then you'll have to pay. It's $5 a tray or $2 for extra meat. Tell the kitchen staff when you get your food and pay the lady at the register." August continued to listen as she followed the lady down the halls and up a flight of stairs. "Your room is on the second floor at the end of the hallway, you'll have one other room as you are pregnant but once you have your baby you'll be moved to a different room with another mother. Your stay here is three months maximum so please start looking for a job within that time. The facility provides a community room that consists of four computers tables, a few desks and a couch for you to use as you please. We also have newspapers filled with jobs looking for new employees and we update it every day. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please fill free to ask."

The moment that the two arrived at Augusts's new room, the lady had bent down to unlock the door and open it. The room wasn't anything special, one bunk bed with another single bed across the room along with a window sitting adjacent to the door and a desk sitting up under it. "Dont worry about the bunk bed, I'll have someone come it and remove the top bunk. Your roommate should arrive today and tomorrow at the latest. If anything changes then we'll notify you, okay?" August nodded as she walked further into the room. "Thank you" she smiled, the lady gave her a side smile before handing her the keys and leaving.

"The cafeteria is open from 4pm to 8pm just so that you know! We do not serve breakfast or lunch so you'll have to find something to eat during that time" she called over her shoulder just as the door closed behind her. August sighed heavily, waddling over to the bunk bed that she wanted to claim. It was on the right side of the room and had the perfect view of the window if she were to lay down and look outside.

August unpacked what she could into the small bedside table next to the wall before she laid in bed and closed her eyes to try and get some sleep.

_______________

August was two hours into her sleep when her room door was opened and in walked the same lady from before with a girl who looked to be the same age as August.

August drowsily sat up in her bed, watching the girl who sat her stuff down and listened to what the lady had to say. It was exactly what she's said to August, word by word. August wondered how many times she'd had to say those exact words for her to be able to remember them.

"Hello" August greeted softly once the lady had left for the second time that day. The girl turned to august with a warm smile, her eyes drifting to August's swollen stomach in wonder. "Hello" the girl held out her hand "I'm Shay" she greeted "August" August shook her hand before dropping it.

"Guess we'll be roommate for a few weeks" shay started off awkwardly, august chuckled with a nod "yep. Would you like to know anything about me so that the atmosphere is a little less awkward?" Shay grinned ear to ear as she nodded quickly.

"Yes that would be wonderful! How about we start off from where we are originally from? I'm from Minnesota but I came here with my boyfriend three years ago. The relationship didn't really work out and for the last few years I've been bouncing from shelter to shelter."

"Wow that's terrible!" August exclaimed with wide eyes, Shay shrugged with a sheepish smile before motioning for August to start talking. "I'm was born and raised in New York. My family isn't poor but we are exactly rich but we got by just fine. My dad did start a business when I was ten and from then on we lived comfortably" she didn't want to flaunt the fake that her father was now making six figures over a silly little business idea nor did she want to be questioned as to why she hadn't gone to them for help so she left that part out.

"That's a lot less eventful life then me" Shay chuckled "how'd you end up here and pregnant?" August pursed her lips with a sigh trying to make its way out. "I fell for the wrong man who didn't want to leave his wife. Five years later and this little sucker comes along."

"Oh I'm sorry for asking" august shook her head "it's fine I knew what I was getting myself into when we started the affair. It's my fault that I couldn't see past my list" with that the two of them fell into silence until Shay recommended that they walk around the building to familiarize themselves with the place. It was already 5pm and they wanted to eat before they got to tired to walk down the stairs.

"Do you have a place to stay after this" Shay questioned when they turned the corner of another hallway. August nodded before replying "a apartment on Brisk Street but it isn't ready yet. The landlord said that it may be ready in a month or two so I'm holding out for it. It's cheap and not very far from a few shops I could potentially work at" Shay frowned "but Brisk street is Notorious for its connections in the mob. That's no place for a baby" august had already known that information but what else could see do on her limited budget. Her parents knew of the baby but did not know the father and if she asked for money they'd ask questions. All her mother needed to know at this point was that she didn't want Sophia, not that William was the father.

"I'm not keeping her" August whispered solemnly. "I only kept her because her father promised me that we'd be a family but when I realized that that was a lie it was to late to abort so I'm giving her to my mother until I can fully support the two of us. Plus I don't plan on being there for long, just a few months then I'm moving far far away from New York."
