Two weeks into her stay August had found a job willing to hire her despite her pregnancy. It was a part time job at a local grocery store in customer service and it allowed her to sit whilst helping make sure that customers got the best care that they needed.

She picked a schedule that worked around the times the shelter was open so that she didn't have to worry about getting locked out. Today had been her third day at her job and she was tired. Her back ached, her muscles were cramping up and her body burned from the heat of the sun so as soon as she arrived back at her room, August fell into bed exhausted.

Shay sat up from her bed and glanced over at August with furrowed brows "are you okay?" She asked softly, August nodded with a harsh intake of breath "yep, just peachy" she replied. Shay sat up properly in her bed and looked over August's worn out body "maybe you should quite" she suggested. August sat up enough so that her back was supported by the wall while her legs were crossed in front of her "I can't, I need the money and plus it's a good job the only thing that's killing me is the walk to and from the bus station" she frowned "other than that I love working at Marco's Market, the manager is nice and the employees understand my situation. They are constantly helping out" the two fell into silence before August groaned loudly "what I need is a spa day" she chuckled.

Shay smiled weakly before shrugging "maybe we should. Your getting paid now and I have a few extra bucks saved up. We can get a massage then go out for dinner and a movie, what do you say?" Augusts's face broke out into a large award winning smile as her head frantically nodded up and down.

"Yes! That would be perfect. Do you want to go today because I'm starving and could really use a steak dinner." Shay shrugged her shoulders "sure but you need to shower first" she gagged in disgust, Augusts's eyes widened in shock before she grabbed the nearest pillow and threw it at Shay. "Meanie" she playfully accused, Shay only laughed while watching August stand up and grab her bathroom toiletries.

It didn't take long for august to get done showering and getting ready and by the time that they had left, the time read 1pm.

The two ladies walked out the doors of the shelter, occasionally greeting parents on their way out before they headed down the street and to the nearest spa. They didn't have appointments and they knew that it would take time before they could get a spot so instead of complaining when the lady told them the wait time, they walked over to the lounge area and sat down to talk.

August felt like a new woman by the time that she left the spa and so did Shay. There was a certain glow to the girls that made some people stop to stare. August beamed at Shay in relief, she was so glad that Shay had suggested a massage and even more glad to have her as a friend. Her back ache was done and her feet felt as if they hadn't been walked on in years, that's how refreshed she felt.

August wrapped her hand in Shays, pulling the two closer while her grin never faded. Shay leaned over to rest her head on Augusts's with a sigh.

The two of them had picked out a relatively cheap restaurant that served steak and was seated immediately upon arrival.

"Thank you sooo much for suggesting this outing" August thanked Shay once they were seated "it's no problem, I'm glad that I did to. It may have been a little pricey but it was nice to finally do something for myself instead of someone else" August made a noise of approval "I couldn't agree more. Two weeks ago I would have never went to a restaurant by myself let alone without my boyfriends permission but now that I have I'm starting to realize just how toxic my relationship was. I was isolated from society for 4 years — if you don't include the year he spent wooing me — not to mention my mother keeping me in a bubble. I spent practically my whole childhood inside the house being taught by her or by a nanny" august shuddered in disgust. "When I finally went to college I was extremely excite about the prospect that I'd finally be able to be myself and make friends and then I met him not long after and my childhood seemed to repeat itself."

Shay pursed her lips in thought "I kind of understand what you mean. My family wasn't the richest when I was young and most of the time we didn't have enough money to pay for dinner let alone pay the electricity so when my mother started spending all of her time at work, my father became angry. I can't say that I was physically abused but mentally I was. I did get to go to school but I never made any friends because I was afraid of them knowing the type of situation I was living in. Most of them had money and food and new clothes while I struggled to buy a new shirt at goodwill" she cringed "so when I met Adam I thought that my life would change. My mother had finally moved out and my father had let himself wallow away in self pity so I thought it would be a good idea to follow Adam to New York. It wasn't. We still lived in poverty, he was abusive and I couldn't take it anymore. Now, here I am, trying to make ends meet by working deadbeat one time deal jobs because no one wants to hire a girl from the ghetto."

The two of them reminisced in the life that they had before moving into the shelter until the waiter came up to them. "What can I get for you ladies" he smiled warmly at the two "I'll have a 16oz ribeye with a loaded baked potato, green beans and a coke please" August smiled at the waiter. Shay glanced over the menu before settling in a baked lemon pepper chicken dish with a Caesar salad on the side.

The food didn't take more than ten minutes to arrive and soon, the two were devouring their meals.

By the time that the two had made their way back to the shelter it was nearing 8pm. After they'd had their meal they had decided to go on a short walk around the neighborhood to enough the quickly approaching night and see if they could spot any stars.

"Wow this was a fun day" august exclaimed as she fell back into her bed, Shay made a noise of agreement "thanks again Shay, I don't think I would have ever done that if you hadn't had brought it up." With that last thanks the two turned off their lamp lights and went to sleep.
