He was Ruler of the Western Lands – a daiyokai – and though he had become susceptible to human-like emotions such as love and compassion, a feeling such as jealousy was, no doubt, beneath him – of this Sesshomaru was certain. He had quickly dismissed Rin’s accusations, though she obviously didn’t believe him. He merely did not like that yokai and probably would have felt the same way had he been standing next to Rin (this was what he’d managed to convince himself).

Dismissing all thoughts about the word ‘Jealous’, he then looked over at Hana, who was still staring blankly out at what seemed to be nothing. She’d always been so happy and lighthearted around him, he thought, that such a melancholy look was unusual. With Rin close behind, he walked back over to the wolf demon, passing Jaken who had been sitting in the grass teary eyed and rubbing the newly formed lump on his head. Rin stopped to help the imp up.

Sesshomaru followed Hana’s gaze and found that she’d been looking at the mountains – purposefully avoiding looking at the numerous edifices of the Southern Wolf Tribe that stood before her.

If that was the cause of her heartache, he could simply destroy the entire tribe – with her wretched father in it.

Behind him, he could hear Rin playfully making fun of Jaken, in an attempt to cheer him up. Either Hana was too lost in thought to notice him standing there or she merely did not wish to talk. He looked down at her.

“Such a downhearted disposition does not suit you well.”

At his comment, she seemed startled – as if she had really been lost in thought – and suddenly, the frown on her face disappeared, replace by an – obviously fake – smile. She nervously rubbed the back of her head.

“Oh, Lord Sesshomaru, I hadn’t seen you there – forgive me.”

Yes, she really hadn’t noticed when Sesshomaru had walked up next to her. This had been the second time in one day. She’d been too deep in her thoughts as to why all this was happening to her and why her father had to be the cause of it.

What would she do next? She had thought to herself. What would Lord Sesshomaru do next? He was a very determined yokai when it came to his pride and his enemies – she had learnt this over time – and seeing that her father had indeed succeeded in provoking the dog demon, Hana was certain that Sesshomaru would try to destroy her father the moment they met, even if it meant destroying the entire tribe in the process – he would never turn down a challenge to test his might.

She didn’t want that to happen.

She had also been wondering what her father would do next.

“…and if you try to interfere, you will face dire consequences, Hana,” his words had echoed in her ears. She had more than interfered – she’d attacked him, shattering his demon armor and leaving a large, diagonal cut across his chest. He hadn’t been very pleased with that. She supposed that she eventually would have to ‘face dire consequences’ at the hands of either her father himself of a large pack of demon wolves. The thought had made her heart ache even more.

“Such a downhearted disposition does not suit you well,” that was when she’d heard Lord Sesshomaru’s calm voice. Something about his caring about her sadness seemed to have cheered Hana up a bit, though her face didn’t really show it. She apologized for not acknowledging his presence earlier, trying to smile.

“This is unlike you,” he said with that tone of voice that never failed in causing the wolf demon to blush. With the way he was looking at her, his eyes not in their usual cold state, Hana suddenly felt the urge to get up and kiss him right there and then. Blushing even more, she averted her gaze, looking down instead.

“What is troubling you?”

At Sesshomaru’s question, Hana hesitated. What was troubling her?

"Wolves - well most of them - are ruthless and determined. I am almost certain that my father won't rest until he's killed me for attacking him and has fought you." Hana brought her knees back up to her chest, hugging them even more tightly than before. She tried her hardest not to succumb to the tears that had been slowly forming in her eyes once again. There was a brief period of silence.

"You have no faith in me," stated Sesshomaru, surprising Hana. Not long after, she heard Rin point out cheerily:

"I think Lord Sesshomaru is smiling~"

"Oh dear," followed Jaken.

Hana raised her head, still frowning, to see that Sesshomaru did indeed have a small, evil smirk on his face as he looked out over the cliff. She raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was thinking.

He then turned around, probably because he was ready to leave. Hana, reluctantly, stood up, unsteady at first. It seemed as if her sadness had also affected her legs, for they had felt fragile and weak for a second. She looked at Sesshomaru curiously, wondering what was going through that mysterious mind of his. Noticing the look on her face, he turned to face her.

"You have no need to worry." His tone had a comforting ring to it. He lifted his hand, resting it on Hana's cheek. She grew flushed at how affectionate he was being in front of Rin and Jaken - that was unlike him. It amazed her how, even when being caring and slightly affectionate, he managed to look somewhat indifferent  - a trait which he had developed after probably hundreds of years and a trait which she admired.

She heard Rin giggle faintly, followed by an audible "hmph," from Jaken. Though still a bit sad, Hana couldn't help but smile - smile at both the feel of Lord Sesshomaru's gentle touch and at the disapproving look she had pictured Jaken to have had on his face.

She didn’t know what he was planning, but Hana supposed that she had no choice but to have faith in the yokai whom she loved greatly.

“That girl is not my daughter,” the wolf lord snarled to himself, standing on the balcony of his bedroom as he winced slightly at the stinging pain across his chest. He placed a hand on the cut on his still bare chest and then removed the hand, looking down at the blood on his fingertips. Most of his long brown hair had fallen out of his ponytail.

“She’s changed,” he murmured to himself, still looking down at the dark red blood on his hand. “A child that attacks their own parent…must be punished.” He looked up at the sky.

“I will see to that after I claim the west as my own.” He grinned to himself.
