Jane and the man landed hard in a firey pit. As the flames lapped up around them, they both searched desperately for a means of escape.

Jane noticed they were in some kind of ballroom - the room was ornately decorated and had tall arches with white marble columns and a tiled dancefloor made from glass. She believed the room would have been very beautiful, had it not been on fire. The only exit she could see was blocked by a wall of fire that was pushing them backwards. The flames were closing in on them from all sides, lapping at their bare feet.

The man reached out his hand, and instinctively she took it. They exchanged a long glance as the flames came closer, and for a moment Jane's attention was caught by his grey eyes. There was something oddly familiar in the way he was looking at her now: a mixture of love, regret and sadness. She'd seen that look before.

Her thoughts ended as the man cried out in pain, his hand pulling free and ripping an amber amulet from around his neck. Where the amulet had been against his skin only moments before were now large blisters. He quickly dropped it, and it skidded across the glass floor towards the flames. Jane realised in amazement that as the amulet came near to being engulfed by the fire, the flames had leapt back away from it.

"It's controlling the fire," Jane said in awe, reaching down and picking up the amulet by its chain, being careful not to touch the molten design hanging from it. As she did, the flames moved forward again, barely missing her as the man beside her pulled her back. Jane held it out again, and sure enough there flames shrunk back. "It's ... like magic."

The man beside her watched curiously as Jane turned the amulet over and saw the carvings on the other side. Her eyes widened as design triggered a memory in her mind: a dark night, a merchant ship, a pile of jewlery - amongst it an amulet with the same, obscure carving.

Jane suddenly thought of another memory of a dark-haired lady wearing the amulet around her neck as she looked out to sea. The lady was smiling at her and pointing out to a school of mermaids leaping out of the sea and waving at them, and Jane recognised her at once. Ma.

A man appeared behind her with short, dark hair and ... grey eyes. The same grey eyes as the man stood beside her now. The kind, loving eyes of her pa.

Kiliah looked up, her memories ending, and met those same grey eyes again. "I remember!"
