After dinner, the boys and I say our goodbyes
for the night. I go from boy to boy with a thank you and a hug, until I get to Jonahs cold figure staring blankly at the ground below his sneakers.
"Bye," I say bleakly. Jonah finally looks
into my eyes and reply's, "Can we talk outside?"
I'm taken off guard by his question and I'm unsure what to say. Jonah answers for me by opening the front door, with a polite gesture for me to walk out. He steps onto the porch after me and says, "About last night..." Jonah's face heats up and I can tell he's nervous to be talking to me.
"I should... have locked the door. I didn't think that anyone would be around." He stops to look at me, watching my facial expressions change.
"Um," I start, still unsure what to reply with.
"To be honest, I don't really care." That's the biggest lie i've ever told.
I continue even though I know I shouldn't.
"You can do whatever you want with anyone you want in your own house Jonah." That's when I say the one thing I really wish I didn't say.
"I'm into Daniel anyways."
Jonah's face falls slightly, but his face returns to the usual smile almost instantly.
"If you're happy, I'm happy. I'll see you later Emma." He walks back into the house leaving me on the porch with a heavy heart and a whole new lie.
