John's POV (5 year old)

I ran around the playground playing with my the boys. My long hair was puffy and put up so it wouldn't get in my way. I had a green puffy skirt on with a turquoise shirt that had a turtle on it. I hated it with all my guts. My mom forced me in it this morning.

I ran to Alex, my best friend who was at the top of the slide.

"Lexi wait for me!" I yelled to him.

I ran up the stairs and to the slide when I was stopped by Thomas Jefferson.

"Only boys are allowed up here!" He yelled. I don't know why but my heart started to hurt and I wanted to cry.

"Janessa is a boy. He's just trapped in a girls body!" Alex stood up for me.

"Whatever." Thomas said annoyed.

I ran up to Alex. "Thank you Lexi you're my hero." I squeal hugging him.

"How can I ever repay you?" I asked Alex.

"We can get married!" Alex yelled.

"Tomorrow at recess! I'll tell the sisters!" I gave Alex a kiss on the check and ran to the Schuyler sisters to tell them.

"Oooh! Can I put flowers in your hair?"
"Eww boys have coodies!"
"Wear your best school dress tomorrow!" All three said at once.

"Okay!"

The next day Lexi and I were married.

8 years later...

It was the middle of summer. Lexi and I were going to spend the week at his family's lake.

I smiled remembering the day back in kindergarten when we got married. But I also remember feeling trapped. That feeling never went away, but only got stronger.

When I was nine, I found out what the word transgender meant.

trans·gen·der
transˈjendər,tranzˈjendər/Submit
adjective
denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.

Was I transgender?

Yes

I lie awake on my bed. I look over at my alarm clock. It was pink and at the top it said 'Go Get 'em Girl!'

My room was purple. I begged for it to be blue. But no. 'I'm a girl' my mom would say.

No I'm not.

I had arrived at Alex's house. I have to tell him. I knocked on the door, tears started to flow from my eyes. I was terrified.

"Hey J! what's wrong?" He saw me crying.

I clang onto Alex.

"C-can we go to your room? I-I have something to tell you."

"Of course." We walked to his room.

"Janessa?"

"Lexi I'm not a girl! I'm a boy!"

"J-"

"You're probably gonna want to leave me now. But you should know. I want to be called John. I'm a boy Lexi!"

"John. That's okay. I love you any way."

He called me John. "Lexi-" He cut me off with a kiss. Our first kiss.

"You're you. And I love you for you. Boy or girl. You're my John. And my love. I won't ever leave."

I kissed him.

12 years later...

"John Laurens do you take Alexander Hamilton to be your lawfully wedded husband."

"I do."

"Alex you may now kiss the groom."
