Have you ever been reading an awesome story on Wattpad, thinking "Oh yeah, this is really great, I can't put it down!" when BAM! (Did you like the bold-italics-caps indicating the sound effect? It shows you how shocking it was.) The main character, who you had already gotten super attached to, dies.
All of a sudden. Without a warning. And it breaks your heart. And it's horrible.
I HATE that! Don't work really hard developing poor little Bob if you're just gonna kill him off at the end! What if someone made YOU just to kill you? How would you feel? Huh? Would you enjoy that? I don't think so.
Stories aren't allowed to do that. It makes me emotional. It's not allowed. It's just not.
If you have to kill someone off, why not make it the random nameless 2-sentence-appearance guy in chapter 4 that nobody cares about? That way everybody's happy! Except, of course, the random nameless 2-sentence-appearance guy in chapter 4.
My question to you, authors who get a kick out of killing off my favorite characters, is why? Did you just have a sudden urge to kill someone off and draw poor Bob's name out of a hat? That's not okay, bro! What if I reaped your name out of a hat and killed you? You wouldn't like that very much, now would you?
Although if I read it in a book that's already really good, it's usually done really well, and there's a good reason behind it (murderous impulses are not a good reason).
When the main character dies in an otherwise-good book, I go from "I love this book! I love this author!" to "This is a horrible book! I hate you, Author!"
And yet, somehow, I still simultaneously love the book and the author, as I'm wiping my tears away (figuratively, of course). What's with that?
