It seemed like days since Shiro had woken up in his pod, surrounded by his team. And it seemed like months until they finally managed to reach earth. By the time they had arrived though, it was too late. Galra fleets already hovered above the atmosphere, not going towards the planet but away from it, a sign that whatever they had come to do, they had accomplished. A panicked feeling began to swell in Shiro's gut as he watched out of the eyes of the black lion, held up only by his tight grip on the pilots chair as Keith continued to take them closer and closer, leading the group. "Be ready to fight!" Keith yelled to the other paladins, but his voice was distant in Shiro's mind. What had happened? What had the Galra done to Earth? The fleet didn't seem to be all that weaponized, however, as Voltron managed to defeat it easily. Just what exactly was going on?
"We need to get going, now. They were coming from Earth not going to it." Shiro told everyone, his grip on the seat getting tighter.
"Right!" Allura said, watching Shiro worriedly from the face cams. The paladins, Coran and Romelle continued down to Earth, but what they found was not what they had left. The ground was barren and full of small craters, some still smoking from whatever hit them. Ships laid around, those smoking as well. There was a mix. A mix of Galra...and Garrison ships.
"No...no, no, no, no..." Lance mumbled, staring at the wreckage from his lion. Everyone looked on in shock, too distracted and panicked to even think to check for survivors. Suddenly, alarms began to go off inside the lions and a small, beat up cruiser made its way in front of them, startling the paladins.
"I don't know what you are, but get the hell off our planet!" Came a voice from the coms. Nobody bothered to wonder how they had managed to find their channel so quickly, instead Shiro turned on face cam, allowing him to see who was on the other side, Iverson.
"Iverson, it's me. Takashi Shirogane. I've come with the three missing cadets, we mean you no harm." Shiro managed to keep his voice steady, but Keith still laid a comforting hand on his arm, being able to tell that Shiro wasn't okay.
"Now I don't know what you alien scum think you're up to trying to trick us but it won't work!"
"Shiro, you made it!" Came a familiar voice from somewhere in the cruiser, and then Sam Holt's face appeared.
"Dad!" Pidge yelled, happy to see her father was safe and sound. It was after Sam managed to calm Iverson and the rest of the crew down that the cruiser led the way towards wherever they were going. They passed by more wreckage, and more than once Shiro tried to distract the paladins by pointing something out in the opposite direction of where he could see bodies of garrison cadets and officials, lying still on the dusty ground. It was quiet until they passed the building, where shouts of alarm soon rang through the coms as the garrison building, or what was left of it, came into view, allowing the paladins to see the smoking and broken ruins of what had used to be their school.
"Sam." Shiro said, inviting the man to once again appear on a screen display from the lions dashboard. "What happened?" Sam sighed and began to explain.
"The Galra attacked, and with their ever advancing technology we were no match. They managed to slip through our defenses undetected, leaving us vulnerable and in the dark. They were on us before we even had the chance to suit up. I'm afraid too many lives were lost today. And not just cadets and the like. Civilians were lost too, we're not sure how many yet and we haven't heard back from the governments of other countries - shiro heard Lance make a scared sound from his lion - but we assume they only attacked here." Sam concluded. The paladins were left to take it all in as the rest of the ride continued in silence until they reached a small bunker inside a hill, which Shiro noted was quite close to the old shack he, Adam, and Keith had used to share. Oh god- Adam. Shiro and Keith walked slowly down the ramp of the Black Lion, Krolia and Cosmo (Keith's wolf) right behind them. Shiro watched as Keith made his way to stand by Lance and the others, following Iverson and the other soldiers into the bunker. "Come on, Shiro." Sam said gently, taking Shiro's brand new robotic arm and pulling him towards the entrance.
"Wait- Sam, where's Adam?" Shiro asked once they stepped foot inside. It went strangely quiet, and Shiro realized he had been louder than he had intended as it seemed everyone in the room had heard him. Each person had a mixture of shock and pity on their face as they looked at the former Black Paladin, and he tried to ignore the growing feeling of dread once again resurfacing in the pit of his stomach.
"I'm sorry, Shiro," Sam looked down, his gaze cast to the floor. "Adam, he- he jumped in the way of a laser heading directly for a young cadet. There wasn't anything we could do."

At first, all Shiro felt was sick. He turned, hunched over, and hurled in a corner, his body visibly shaking from shock. Then he felt sadness. Tears flooded his vision and he had to choke back sobs, slamming his metal fist into the nearest wall. And then, sadness was replaced with denial, and denial replaced with rage. Scorching hot, blood boiling rage that activated his arm, which he used to punch through the wall and into the rock of the surrounding mountain. He heard his name being called, and could even faintly hear his own screams of anguish and hatred as he continued to punch the wall over and over, probably denting his arm slightly. And then he felt arms wrapping around him, and no matter how much he struggled the strong arms of whoever it was did not let go, and then slight sniffling registered in his mind, and he went slack as he realized he wasn't the only one crying. He recognized the familiar red Paladin armor, and all at once a new wave of grief overcame him, and he turned, pulling his brother into a hug as they both shrunk to the floor, clinging to each other as Shiro cried, mourning the loss of the man he had loved, had been ready to marry, and Keith occasionally allowed a few tears to slip because he had been close to Adam too- had known him and laughed with him. Adam had been the one to get him into knives, had been the one to show him how to do cool tricks and had given Keith his very first knife apart from his Marmora Blade. The two cried until they were left just hiccuping, and the only thing filling Shiro now was pure hatred for the Galra, and an itch for revenge.
