Chapter 1

Somewhere in the Arctic.

A yellow and white truck drives up in front of a man holding a red light.
"Are you the guys from Washington?" The search team leader asks
"You get many other visitors out here?" A S.H.I.E.L.D. tech asks back
"How long have you been on site?" A S.H.I.E.L.D. Lieutenant questions.
"Since this morning. A Russian oil team called it in about 18 hours ago." The Team leader answers.
"How come nobody spotted it before?" The Lieutenant asks.

"It's really not that surprising. This landscape's changing all the time. You got any ideas what this thing is exactly?" Team leader questions.
" I don't know. It's probably a weather balloon." Lieutenant states.
"I don't think so. You know we don't have the equipment for a job like this." Team leader informs.
How long before we can start craning it out?" Tech asks.
"I don't think you quite understand. You guys are gonna need one hell of a crane!" Team leader yells as they come up to a huge plane frozen in ice.

The S.H.I.E.L.D agents cut a hole in the plane and jumps down inside. "Base, we're in." The Lieutenant states looking around. "what's this?" He asks himself. The technician nearly slips on the ice covering the ground. "Careful," The Lieutenant tells the tech.

The technician looks around when he spots something. "Lieutenant! What is it?" The Tech asks looking at something frozen in the ice. "My god! Base, give me a line to the colonial." The Lieutenant says into his earpiece.
"It's 3 a.m., sir." States the voice from the earpiece.

"I don't care what time it is. This one's waited long enough" The Lieutenant says brushing some snow off a pile of ice to reveal a shield with a silver star on it.

March 1942 Tønsberg, Norway.

A villager, Jan, is running to a church.
"They have come for it!" Jan exclaims.
"They have before," the tower keeper says.
"Not like this" Jan states.
"Let them come. They will never find it." Tower keeper says confidently.
They hear rumbling and a loud crash as something breaks down the door, knocking down the tower keeper and killing Jan. The tower keeper closes Jan's eyes and sees a machine moving away HYDRA agents come in.

A car drives up with the HYDRA symbol on the hood. HYDRA agents try to lift up the lid of a coffin.
"Open it! Quickly before he-" a HYDRA lieutenant starts to say but is cut off.
"It has taken me a long time to find this place. You should be commended. Help him up." Johann Schmidt says as one of the HYDRA agents helps the tower keeper up.
"I think that you are a man of great vision. And in this way we are much alike,"  Schmidt informs The tower keeper.
"I am nothing like you" Tower keeper says defensively.
"No, of course. But what others see as superstition, you and I know to be science" Schmidt states.
"What you seek is just a legend." tower keeper informs.
"Then why make such an effort to conceal it?" Schmidt asks as he opens an old tomb and picks up a glass cube from a skeleton remains of an old Viking. "The Tesseract was the jewel of Odin's treasure room," Schmidt informs as he turns to face the tower keeper and deliberately drops and smashes the glass cube. "It's not something one buries. But I think it is close. Yes?" Schmidt asks.
"I cannot help you." Tower keeper states.
"No. But maybe you can help your village. You must have some friends out there. Some...some little grandchildren perhaps. I have no need for them to die." Schmidt says as a big tank outside turns its guns towards the village threateningly.
"Yggdrasil. Tree of the world. Guardian of wisdom and fate, also." Schmidt says referring to the carving of the tree on one of the tower walls as he pushes a button on the carving of the tree and it opens but to reveal the real cube. "And the Führer digs for trinkets in the desert. You have never seen this, have you?" Schmidt questions hold out the cube.
"It's not for the eyes of ordinary men." Tower keeper states.
"Exactly. Give the order to open fire."  Schmidt orders his men.
"Jawohl! (Yes!)" A HYDRA Lieutenant yells.
"Fool! You cannot control the power you hold. You will burn!" The tower keeper exclaims.
"I already have," Schmidt says before shooting and killing the tower keeper.
