I land in my seat just as Mr. Howard calls my name and I tell him I'm present.

"Where were you?" Daniel whispers.

"After you guys left, he - um..... we were uh..... gonna um.... we were gonna uh, er.... I mean, the bell rang so we couldn't really... but, uh, we were gonna kiss?" Daniel gapes at me and I blush even harder.

"At least it seemed like it." I try to make it not seem that big.

"Oh my god, ma boy almost had his first kiss! With his bully too!" Daniel ruffles my hair, and then I decide to embarrass him a bit.

"What's up with you and Jonah?" I ask, smirking internally.

"Uh, um....." For the first time in my life, Dani looks speechless.

"He took me to the beach, and then we were messing around when he tackled me and he wouldn't get off. We were laughing and then it went silent and he looked at me and I looked at him and we kissed. Then he told me he liked me. And asked if I wanted to be his boyfriend." He says. My face is in permanent shock.

"All in the first date?! Damn, Daniel." I laugh a bit.

"Boys, get to work please." Mr. Howard says sternly peering over the top of his glasses. I blush and Jack catches my eye and I blush even harder. He just smirks and I'm red hot right now and Jack winks at me, which makes me even redder. Daniel's laughing right now because he just watched me turn 4 different shades of red.

"Dude you get flustered so easily." Dani teases, playfully shoving me.

"It's not my fault he's kinda hot." I whisper. I bury my face in my hands.

"I can't believe I just said that." I groan.

"I can't believe you did either." Jack's voice comes from above my head. I blush a furious red while Daniel just laughs.

"Hey, you wanna come over later?" Jack asks Dani, who nods. "Bring the rest of the guys too." He adds.

"I'll see you there, Herron." Jack says over his shoulder. Then Daniel leans over to me and whispers.

"He likes youuu......" I blush even harder and just shake my head.

"He's a jock and I'm a gay nerd. There's no way." I say. Because there really is no way.

"Well, you even said-" I kick Dani under the table.

"Like I said, it was probably nothing. Or a dare." I roll my eyes at him.

"Okay, Herron. Fine." Dani pokes me on the ribs and I jump, then roll my eyes at him.

"Oh my god....it's a party. You know what? You guys go in, I'm gonna sit outside and wait for you guys. I have bad experiences with parties." I say while staring at the strobe lights coming from inside the house. The guys all nod and go inside and I wander around, looking for a park. Finally, I find one and lay in the grass, looking at the constellations and listening to music.

Suddenly, blinding light takes over my vision and I squint and hear a small pop.

"Why are you outside?" Oh. Of course it's Jack.

"Parties aren't my thing." I say simply. I can't like Jack. I can't. If he kisses me or does anything like it, I know it's gonna be a dare. Since I was little, I taught myself to think of the worst case scenario after all of the bullying. I have never let myself hope in any way since.

"Zach, come on. They're fun!" Jack pleads with me. I shake my head firmly, and tilt my head back to look at the stars again.

"Can you name the constellations?" Jack asks suddenly. I nod.

"That one over there? It's the Big Dipper. And that one to the left right there is Ursa Major, over there is Capricorn, and...." I told Jack all of the constellations that were in the sky, and he nodded along, trying to follow. At night, I would climb up to the top of our house and just look at the stars. Eventually, I'd fall asleep and my mom would find me on the roof in the morning.

"And finally, that star over there is the North Star." I finish and Jack sighs.

"That's amazing, Herron. Anyway, when Gabbie put all of them in a Trance, I was awake. I wasn't in a Trance." I suck in a sharp breath.

"And Zach?" Jack asks.

"Hmm?" I turn on my side to look at him, and suddenly, his lips are on mine and I can feel the electricity in the air around us and I curl my fingers in his hair while he holds onto my waist. But there's something off about the kiss that I can't quite place. Finally, we break away and I can hear sarcastic clapping.

Gabbie.

"Wow, Jack. I didn't think you'd actually do it." The words hit me in the chest and I look at Jack whose face is appalled, and I know it's true. It was a dare.

"The one time I let myself hope, and look what happens. I thought maybe you were different, but again, I was wrong. How many times are you gonna have to do this to me before I learn to not trust you?" I laugh but there's no humor in it.

"Zach, please I can exp-"

"You can explain? Isn't that what you said last time? Jack, I don't know what to say to you anymore. Just leave me alone." Then, I turn to Gabbie.

"You want him? Take him. I don't care. But if you plan on putting him in a Trance your whole life, have fun." And with that, I shadow travel away.

I end up in Jonah's car and punch the wheel, angry at myself for hoping. The car honks and I burst into sobs until I hear a tap on the window. I look up and see Corbyn peering in with a concerned look on his face. I shake my head no, but then he opens the door to the passenger seat anyways.

"Ok, what's wrong?" And so I tell him through a series of hiccups and sobs. When I'm done, Corbyn just hugs me and pats my head.

"Don't tell the guys please." I beg, but he objects.

"They're also your friends. They have a right to know." Sighing, I nod and rest my head against the wheel and fall asleep.
