chapter five

Steve had called May Parker, and invited her over to discuss something very important. "What is going on? Is everything okay?" May hadn't heard from Steve in a long time, and was concerned why they needed to speak to her so urgently.

"So, Tony and I have put a lot of thought into this and we have decided to enlist in the military. And we want you to watch over Peter while we are gone." She was shocked at first, and not sure how to respond. "I, um, are you sure?"

"May, please."

May had always wanted to have children of her own but never had the chance to settle down. Maybe this will be a good thing, she thought to herself.

"Okay, I'll do it." Steve and Tony were thrilled to hear this. They knew May would take great care of their son while they were away. "I'll go get Peter," Steve said running to Peter's room.

"Pete? There's someone who wants to meet you." The boy walked shyly behind his father, squeezing his hand tight. "Peter, this is May. She's going to look after you while Daddy and I are gone."

"Hi, Peter," May said, kneeling down to his level. "It's nice to meet you."

Peter didn't say anything, just looked at her. He had never had a mom before, and he never really wanted a mom. He was happy with his dads. "No," he said as he ran to his room.

"I'm sorry, May. You have to understand this is very hard for him. It might take sometime for him to get used to you."

"That's alright. I understand."

"I'm gonna go check on him," said Tony, who had been silent all this time.

"Pete?" he said, slowly entering the room.

"Go away." Tony sat down on the bed next to him.

"Peter, I know this is going to be hard. Trust me, this is the hardest thing I've ever done. I don't want to leave you and neither does Pops, but it's only gonna be for a short while. A year at most. We'll be back, I promise."
