I was right. I got at most 3 hours of sleep that night. It only made the time go slower. It was now seven in the morning and so finally time to get up. As soon as I sat up on my bed I heard a shout coming from downstairs.

Dad : SAM GET UP!!!

Sam : I'M ALREADY UP!!!

Dad : OH, OK GOOD!!!

I giggled to myself. I picked up my phone and saw that I had a couple of messages from Joel.

"Joel : good morning beautiful! X"

"Joel : are you there?"

"Joel : Sam? Answer me!?"

"Joel : where are you?"

I sighed as I began to type.

"Sam : morning x"

I sent it and put my phone off. I got ready as fast as I could, packed my bag and made my way downstairs for breakfast. I could smell eggs as soon as I left my room and the smell only got stronger as I walked downstairs.

Dad : oh hello pet, I've made French toast for breakfast!

I smiled as I looked over at the pan he was holding and then to Annabelle who sat at the table with her eyes wide, staring at me, trying not to laugh. Annabelle is my younger sister. She's only 13 years old but she's worryingly clever for her age. She's way smarter than me and I'm 4 years older. But it's a good thing as it makes us closer because she acts way older.

Sam : great!

I giggled to myself as I sat down at the table next to her. He brought the pan over moments later and flopped a couple of French toast on each of our plates. I stared at it's burnt edges and green mould on the corners before looking up at Annabelle. We laughed quietly but I did feel bad for him inside.

He's tried his best to be mum and dad since mum died when I was six. He really does care about us a lot and wants us to be happy and that's why he makes such an effort but sometimes it's just too much for him to handle.

He sat down next to us with his portion and began to munch away.

Dad : so, today is the day is it?

Sam : yup.

Annabelle : I can't believe you're getting to go to Croatia. You're so lucky.

Sam : I don't know if I'm actually going yet. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much.

Dad : good idea, you don't want to be disappointed.

Annabelle : when do you find out?

Sam : first period in English.

Annabelle : text me as soon as you find out.

Dad : and me!

Sam : will do.

I cut around the mould and just made do with the burnt bits and managed to eat about half before I had to leave for school.

Sam : right, I better head.

Dad : bye, good luck.

Sam : thanks dad.

I lifted my bag onto my back and made my way out the door.

Sydney : I don't actually mind if I don't get in.

Harper and I stared at her, baffled by her comment.

Sydney : well I do, but I'd rather that than I get in and you two don't. Don't wanna be in Croatia with no one to talk to.

Harper : that's true actually.

Sam : we're thinking too much into it. What happens happens. You can always drop out.

Harper : that's also true.

The bell rang. We all said goodbye and good luck before making our way to class. As I was walking to English I bumped into Joel.

Joel : oh hey.

He leaned in and kissed me.

Sam : I'm gonna be late for class.

I began to walk away but he grabbed my arm instead. He kissed me once again.

Joel : this holiday is gonna be so much fun.

Sam : we don't even know if we got in yet.

Joel : we will, we have to.

He let go of my arm and so I left for class. I opened the door to English to see that everyone was already seated and staring at me.

Sam : sorry I'm late.

The teacher ignored me and so I took my seat next to the window. She began to speak but I wasn't listening. My thoughts were elsewhere until I heard her start talking about the trip.

Teacher : so I'm sure you're all dying to know if you got in to the trip to Croatia next month.

Everyone sat up straight in their seats, fully engaged in what she was saying.

Teacher : well I don't want you distracted throughout today's lesson so I've decided to let you know at the end of the period.

Grunts and moans filled the room as I, once again, stopped listening. It was also a double period which made the time go even slower

The full period was spent gazing out the window in my own little world, dreaming about blue waters and sandy beaches. Summer playlists and 99 cones on the harbour. Sunshine in my eyes and-

Teacher : right, we have five minutes left which means, well I think you all know what it means.

Everyone began to clear their workbooks and pencils off their desks as the teacher gathered a bundle of papers off her desk and began to hand them out.

There were mixed reactions all round as she placed the papers on each and every pupils desks. There were squeals and sighs which meant no one really knew what their future held.

She finally made her away past my desk and placed a piece of paper down in front of me. I didn't want to look at first. I was scared of the disappointment.

Danielle : did you get in?

I looked up at the girl in front and shrugged.

Finally, when I had psyched myself up enough, I flipped the paper over and began to read.

I squealed with joy as I read.

Danielle : well?

Sam : I got in!
