Principal : oh hello Sam. And what brings you here?
I sat down at the seat on the opposite side of the table facing him as he linked his fingers and placed them on the desk in front of him.
Sam : I'd like to drop out of the Croatian trip.
I managed to hold back the tears but he could tell something was up. He was one of those teachers.
Principal : is something the matter?
Sam : no, I've just decided that I don't want to go anymore.
Principal : but you were one of the first to get a letter for it. What changed your mind?
Sam : does it matter?
He stared at me for a second. Trying to figure me out.
Principal : you do realise that if you decide you want to go after then it will be near impossible to get your space back? This is a very popular trip.
I felt the lump in my throat grow bigger.
Sam : I realise that but I'm positive with my decision.
Principal : very well. I'll take your name off the list.
Sam : thank you.
I stood up from my seat and began to walk out, not looking back.
Syd : how'd it go?
Sam : good.
Harper : is he taking you off the list?
Sam : yup.
Harper : aw Sam.
She hugged me tightly and then we walked to English like yesterday. Only, this time I wasn't skipping with excitement but sulking with despair. So much had changed in just 24 hours. I just wish it hadn't changed for the worst.
I walked into my classroom with an obvious gloomy face. As the room was full of chat and I sat down at my single desk by the window, Danielle spun round in her seat to face me.
Danielle : what with the face? I thought you'd be happy after you got in?
Sam : I dropped out.
Danielle : what why?!?
Sam : it's complicated.
Danielle : I would never drop out of something as amazing as this! I can't wait to go!
Sam : good for you.
She smiled as she spun back around to face the front of the classroom. I rolled my eyes at her sudden happiness for my sadness and sat staring out the window. Once again, my mind wandered to the beach. At least yesterday I had my hope. Today all I can do is dream.

Two weeks later ///
Syd : I actually feel so sad right now.
She sat at the lunch table staring at her phone.
Harper : why? What's up!?
Syd : Marcus and Martinus are having so many concerts and I'm not at a single one.
Harper and I rolled our eyes.
Sam : Syd. You've been to about 6 of their concerts in the last year. I think you're good.
Syd : yeah but my next one's not for another 3 months! I'm not sure I can wait that long!!!
Harper : well there's nothing you can do about it.
Syd : that's why I'm sad.
I sighed as I giggled at her comment.
God I hadn't laughed in so long. The last couple of weeks have been torture. I've had to deal with Croatia talk 24/7. Everyone's talking about it ; arranging where everyone's gonna sit, the room groups, what they're gonna bring. I can't get away from it all. It's everywhere.
Syd and Harper are being nice about it though. They've tried their best not to talk about the trip when around me but sometimes the subject just comes up by accident. Joel would just try and change the subject whilst I remain quiet.
I think I just need all of it to be over. I wish they can just hurry up and go on the trip and then it's done. It's this Friday that they leave so I've not got long now but it's dragging out so much. They can come home and we can live our lives like normal again. Except I'll still have Joel to deal with.
As Joel came to mind, suddenly two arms wrapped around my neck from behind. I jumped out my seat to face Joel smiling at me.
Joel : it's only me.
I sat back down in my seat as I took a deep breath to calm my self. He took hold of my hands and began kissing my neck. I nudged away a little but he wouldn't stop.
Sam : Joel, not now.
He lifted his head away, disappointed.
Joel : when then? Come to my place after?
Sam : maybe another time, I've got a ton of homework.
Joel : come on.
Sam : I can't, I'm sorry.
Joel : do your homework at mine.
I shook my head.
Harper : why don't you wanna go?
Sam : I do I just-
Joel : well come then.
Sam : I'm just really-
Joel : Sam.
I paused and stared up at his intimidating eyes to which glared down at my defenceless face.
Sam : o-ok.
Joel : good, meet you at the lockers.
He kissed me on the cheek and walked away. I turned back around to face Syd and Harper who heard and saw the full thing.
Harper : you guys are so cute!
She was oblivious. I continued to eat my chips.
Syd : why didn't you want to go back to his?
Sam : I told you, I've got a lot of homework!
Syd : ok, no need to get nippy.
Suddenly the tannoy came on, interrupting everyone from eating their lunch. The full hall fell silent.
"Good afternoon, my apologies for the interruption. I have an announcement for the pupils attending the Croatia trip on Friday. Can all pupils attending the Croatia trip go to room F6 to attend a short meeting. Thank you."
My heart sank at the mention of the trip. And then it sank even more when I realised I was gonna be left alone at a full sized table for the remaining 15 minutes of lunch. Syd and Harper stood up with their trays.
Syd : sorry Sam.
Sam : don't worry about it.
Harper : we feel bad.
Sam : it's not your fault.
Then they left. I was left. Alone.
