Pounding in distance vibrate through the ground up to my mountainous resting place. From within my den I grunt stirring. Stretching as I rise. I shake my enormous bulk. Grogginess still tries to hold on because I bump to den wall. Sluggish walk advancing towards the den entrance. Every step I hear a noise outside become stronger, closer to the entrance. My eyes see something else. Something I like. Through cracks of piled dirt now blocking the entrance, small beams, I see break-in. Must have happened when the snow slid down from the mountain. This den is a good spot I remember and will return. Last year, this den I picked for sleep. I dug between two boulders because I wanted to protect from snow and flood. My brother, Azabache, tells me he likes it too.
My claws ripping away the blocking dirt and rubble. The earth is fresh and has a good smell. Now something else, a scent on the breeze comes in, grazing my nose. Yet no matter how light. Father's scent I will recognize till my dying day, Father!
The thought of father exhilarates me. Today see him, I will, I must. I claw faster, Father, my father, at last back. Dirt and slight rocks hit me, but I don't feel. Only faster, I claw moving towards the entrance, thinking of, father. But as I near, I am stopped.
Opening entrance, push my head outside, and another scent I lift. It is him, my dream mate. It is all I need. It spurs power, and my body responds harder. I push escaping, opening more. I scent the air once more after coming out MATE! But only father now. No more smell why? What does Goddess tell me? The sun warm nice my fur. And I see it is bright. It makes me must blink a lot. But this helps with ad ing. Now whiff I do again. Father so following Father Scent. I lumber down the mountainside heading towards the hurtful noise—that where my father is.
Father and my dream mate are connected. I will find both and at last.... be no more alone. I gone before to my home searching for father and my pack, but too much noise. We don't like sound; it smells and not smell father till now. But I scent, father is two.
"Father, I come." travel towards the noise I start and think my dream mate. He is nice. Many years have I dream of him. I know he male because Goddess from river speak to me. She tells me he gentle and hearts soft like mine. That important because father good heart and I want father happy with my mate.
The closer I get to pack home, louder is noise in my ear and hurt. I stop, not go now. I wait tonight then go. They never make noise at night. I also must tell father about a one-eye death speaker. He was here and bring back life ashes of the dead pack. Ugh. The noise my ears hurt.
I change path, for now, going for food. Earth speak to me. Lifting muzzle high same as father taught me, I breathe in deep. I smell fresh blood east, away from father. It is Moose, my stomach rumble I growl, she had a baby and me hungry. I decided on food more important right now and go for food now.
I think of Father and smile. Father have always help me and protect me and give me family. That's why I want like father to be. Not bear. Every year I sleep/hibernate but not bad now. I get to dream of my wulf mate. Mate always there, and we always together. He is beautiful chocolate brown with white on chest his—my wulf mate, his name Kerval. I am alone, but I am not alone. Family I have, my pack. But still, outside, I am different. I am bear.
They are wulf. I want be me both outside and inside. Like my father, I will be wulf... like my pack—family wulves.
I no longer hear the noise. Because now I smell it. Moose. Its scent is stronger; I know it is here. I can hear her in the bushes. The mother is watch me but not come close. She knows I almost kill her before. She loves her life. But I want her meat. For now, I will find her baby.
I smell around. Rock, no. Tree falls; it was there before, no. I go to water and little grass area, no. Then I see pine tree new on ground and smell deep. THERE my stomach grumble. And I run there. I jump up and down close. Like father taught me, and it work. The baby run, and I chase. It jump over tree on the ground, me too. Then it turn and go back this time it try jump between branches and trip. MINE, I pounce, I snap it neck one bite, and it is death.
Ground thunder vibrate as is shake from right of me I look. Moose mother, she is come to defend baby. Good I am hungry.... a lot. I move and lay down feet under me for jump. Like father taught me.
I am between dead tree and mother. She must jump up and over tree to stab me. She not smart and trip with branches sticking up. Too late for her. Father taught me. I jump up as mother moose jump over tree and bang with her. She fall off her feet, and I bite and claw her open. Her blood and guts pour on top of me, and I don't care. Wash in the river I will before see father. Focus no, I look at both bodies. I will eat well. Very good. Thank you, father, for all you teach me. For now, I go to sleep. Then go river and bathe before see father.
When I wake up it is dark, I leave the food to bathe and to father. I will be happy to see father and he me. I am bigger now, stronger. I protect father and my family from death speaker, from anything. I snarl pull back my lips angry think of death speaker. I see he spread ash. And dead wulf awaken. You will NOT HURT FATHER! Father, I am come to protect you. I run.
