Valentine's Day; a day of spending time with your loved one, spending too much money on extravagant gifts, and going out for elaborate, fancy dates. It's supposed to be a day of romance and joy. In the grande scheme of things, Valentine's Day means something different for everyone, but there is one thing that everyone agrees on when it comes to the widely celebrated holiday, and that is that no one ever plans on ending up in the emergency room.
Just because you didn't plan on it, however, doesn't mean it won't happen.
*Beep! Beep!*
"Would someone please tell me what's going on?!" I rushed into the hospital, trying not to lose my mind as my pager went off every thirty seconds. If that damned device beeped at me one more time, I swore I was going to chuck it at the nearest wall.
"Grandinetti's roof collapsed," Callie informed me and I skidded to a stop beside her in front of the OR board, which was currently being cleared of all surgeries that had been scheduled for the day. "We'll be getting more than a dozen. All scheduled procedures are pushed."
Clipping my pager back onto the waistband of my scrub bottoms, I began searching my pockets for a hair tie. But, of course, I had been in such a rush to leave the house that I had forgotten to grab one. Before I could complain, though, Arizona and Bailey walked up beside me to inspect the board as well, and noticing my struggle, Arizona passed me a spare elastic.
Taking the hair tie, I flashed a thankful smile. Arizona nodded before glancing up at the empty board. "Uh. On Valentines Day?" she sighed. "Grandinetti's must have been packed."
"Well, tonight's out. I told you this would happen." Callie told Arizona as the four of us turned and started toward the ER.
"Well, that's why we went to dinner at four o'clock." Arizona smiled. "And exchanged gifts. Look." On cue, Arizona and Callie both showed off the necklace that they had received from one another. Trying to be polite, I faked an 'I'm so happy for you' smile.
"Just special. Original. Magical. Squeals of joy." Bailey mocked them, clearly not a fan of the holiday of love.
Arizona looked down at the shorter woman and chuckled. "Wow. Scrooge."
"Scrooge is Christmas." Bailey corrected. "That's a holiday."
"All right. Well, I'm gonna go hunt around the ER for a good case." I parted ways with the group of attendings, eager to dive head-first into medicine and stop talking about Valentine's Day. "Good luck with . . . whatever you guys have got going on."
It wasn't that I necessarily disliked Valentine's Day—I certainly seemed to enjoy it more than Bailey did—but I just wasn't a fan because I never really celebrated it. As a rule, I was usually much too busy with school or work to worry about a boyfriend, and on the rare occasion I did date, it was brief and never happened to extend through the month of February.
So, as usual, I decided to focus on the task at hand. Grabbing a pair of gloves from the dispensary as I entered the emergency room, I spotted Alex standing over near the admit desk and wandered over. "Did you hear?" I asked.
"Hear what?" Alex huffed, not looking up from whatever he was doing.
"The roof collapsed at some fancy restaurant." I almost squealed, my eyes constantly darting toward the ambulance bay to see when the first patient would arrive. "There are going to be so many traumas!"
Alex glanced up at me slightly this time. "Doesn't it make you a bad person to be excited that people are hurt?"
"Not if I fix them up after, it doesn't." I reasoned with a shrug.
With her head buried in a pile of charts, Lexie bustled over to the desk. She didn't greet Alex or I, and didn't even glance up at us, but as soon as we saw her, we couldn't tear our eyes away. Lexie had at some point, between now and the last time I had seen her, dyed her hair blonde. She looked like a completely different person.
