My pager going off in the middle of the night was an all too familiar way for me to wake up. That sound was usually the start to a rough couple of hours, and this time was no exception.
Time seemed to move in slow motion as I walked into the trauma room that night, as awake as I could be and ready for anything. Although, can you really ever be ready to see a family member or friend on the table?
As soon as I walked in my heart sank as the sight of Henry coughing up blood. Teddy, wide-eyed and a worried expression, stood beside him. Not as a doctor, but as a wife.
"Okay, okay." Bailey tried to keep everyone calm, "You're gonna be okay."
"Let's get a good line in him," Owen said.
Bailey nodded, "Okay, and where is X-Ray? Get them in here, stat."
Teddy tried to keep her cool, "He, uh, hasn't been having trouble with his, uh, V.H.L. no, uh, tumors since, um...uh, when, uh, when was your last C.T.? It was, uh, it was June."
"Dr. Webber did a full workup." Henry coughed out.
"Okay, then let's page Dr. Webber, please," Bailey instructed.
Owen tried to put in a line, but it wasn't working, "His veins are shot. Let's go ahead and put in a central line. We're gonna put a line in so we can give you I.V. fluids and once we get the X-Ray, we should have a better idea of what's going on."
Everyone got to work as Owen stepped over to Teddy, "We got him. Okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah." Teddy wiped her tears away and she stood back and watched.
As I rushed through the halls on my way back to Henry, I ran into Cristina. "Oh, hey." I tried my best to seem not at all panicked, "You're here."
"I am." she walked with me until we came across Meredith sitting on a stretcher in the hall. "What did Janet say?" Cristina asked, "Meredith?"
Meredith rubbed her legs with her hands, "We're not getting her back."
My eyes widened, "What do you mean? What exactly did she say?"
"That we're not getting her back." Meredith's eyes were red.
"She said that?" Cristina asked.
"She said that the court...cancelled our hearing date." Meredith told us, "And when they do that, it means either one of two things...that they looked at our file and they love us and they're giving her to us, in which case they call Janet and tell her that, or that they hate us and they're giving her to another family. And she didn't get the "they love us" call."
"Well, maybe they didn't get around to it," Cristina suggested.
Meredith sighed, "She said we should move on. That's what she said. You want to know her exact words were 'I think it's time that you and Derek start thinking about moving on.'"
"Oh, my God." Cristina exhaled as we sat down on the stretcher next to her, "Oh, God. How can they do this? You can cry."
"I don't want to cry," Meredith said.
Cristina nodded, "I know."
"I'm never gonna see her again," Meredith spoke softly. We pulled her in for a hug, but she pushed us away, "Okay, stop. I don't want to cry."
"Okay, I know." I placed my hand on her back.
As Meredith took sharp breaths, I stood up, "I really have to go now. Henry's in the hospital and it doesn't look good."
"Henry's here?" Cristina asked.
I nodded, "Yeah, catch you later."
I arrived back at the room just as Dr. Webber finished his check up on Henry. "Call up to C.T. tell 'em we're on our way up." Dr. Webber said.
"Screw C.T. and go straight to the bronchoscope." Teddy sighed, "You need to find out what is down there."
"C.T. will clarify what we're dealing with." Owen told her, "It won't delay anything and you're not his doctor. Richard is."
Bailey nodded, "I hear he's good. I mean, I-I don't know. He's new around here."
"She doesn't like it when I'm in the hospital." Henry weakly said, "Makes you wonder why she married a guy with chronic illness."
"Masochist." Owen spoke up, "Call me if you need anything."
As Owen left the room, I ran to catch up with him. "Uh, Dr. Hunt, do you have a moment?" I asked.
Owen turned to face me, "Of course, Dr. Forrest. What's up."
"Well..." I started, "I've been thinking about what field I want to go in to and you know I've tried Neuro and General, but I think I enjoy Trauma the most."
Owen nodded, "Okay, and?"
"I want to go into Trauma." I spat out, having really only gone over this conversion, or this idea really, in my head a few times.
Owen thought for a moment, "Okay, well, picking your specialty shouldn't be done lightly, so think about it for a week or so, and if you're serious, come talk to me again."
"Done." I smiled.
As Owen left, Arizona came up to me, "Hey, um, I have Alex and Meredith going to pick up a baby from a nearby hospital, are you free to go as well?"
I nodded, "Absolutely."
Arizona smiled, "Great, they're getting into an ambulance right now. Go meet them there, I'll page and let them know you're on your way."
Giving the chart I was holding to a nearby nurse, I rushed to grab one of the hospital's bulky jackets before making my way to the ambulance bay. On my way, I bumped into Jackson. "Shit, sorry." I apologized.
Jackson looked at my jacket, "Going somewhere?"
"Picking up a baby with Alex and Meredith." I answered, "I really have to go."
Turning to leave, I rushed off again down the hall. "Lexie and I broke up!" Jackson called after me. I stopped dead in my tracks. Turning to face him, I was now outside and the cold wind was whipping my skin. "Why would you tell me that?" I called back.
Jackson shrugged, "I don't know. It just kind of slipped out."
"Oh, well..." I sighed, "Sorry to hear that. Maybe you should go to Joe's after and get a rebound girl."
Jackson smirked, "Maybe I will."
"Good." I nodded before turning and getting into the back of the ambulance.
"What was all of that with you and Avery?" Alex asked as he closed the doors and the ambulance took off.
I sat back in my seat, "He felt the need to tell me that he and Lexie broke up."
"It's 'cause he still likes you," Alex told me.
I shook my head, "No, it's not."
Alex turned and looked me right in the eyes, "Yes, Ellie, it is."
