"Come on!" Sam begged relentlessly, following me around the house as I gathered my things for work. "You cannot go on a date, tell me it went 'okay' and then leave it at that!"
"Yes, I can," I told her, grabbing my car keys from the counter and starting for the door. "I do not kiss and tell."
Sam stopped in her tracks and gasped. "Oh, my God! You kissed him?!"
". . . maybe." I hinted with a wink before throwing open the front door.
"Get back here you litt-" Sam's voice was cut off as I shut the door behind myself.
With a small chuckle, I gave Sam, who was glaring at me through the window, a wave goodbye before hopping into my car and heading to work for the day. I knew that, eventually, I would fill Sam in on what was going on between Jackson and myself, but I also knew that once I opened that metaphorical Pandora's box, she wouldn't be able to stop asking questions, which I didn't have time for at the moment.
Plus, I wanted to make sure I knew for sure what was going on between Jackson and myself before I went telling other people.
An hour later, I was changed into my scrubs and making my way through the hospital halls. My eyes were peeled for Jackson, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to see him or if I was more trying to avoid an awkward interaction. My main concern had more to do with the fact that I wasn't sure if my 'trying to keep it PG on the first date' thing had accidentally come off as 'I'm a snobby bitch that doesn't want to sleep with you' thing.
Before I could start spiralling in my mind too much, however, I had arrived to the room that Webber had paged me to for the day. I had no idea what the case was, so I simply stepped into the room and listened as the patient spoke.
Taking a look at the chart in Webber's hands, I noted that the patient's name was Alison Clark.
"So then, a couple of days ago, we're at the grocery store, Gary and I, and the next thing I know, I'm flat on my back in the frozen foods section." Alison, an older woman, explained to Webber, April, Lexie, and myself.
I hadn't exactly gotten the chance to work with either woman before yet, but since April had already been fired once before and Lexie was a few years behind myself and the others, I was sure it would be nothing less than an interesting experience, to say the least.
"She fainted." the woman's husband, Gary, spoke up.
The patient, Alison, nodded. "And I've never fainted. I've never seen anybody faint. I don't believe in fainting."
"Did you hit your head?" Webber asked.
"I would've if this one hadn't caught me." Alison let out an airy chuckle and gently rested her hand on her husband's arm.
Stepping to the side, Lexie pulled up an image on the computer screen. "Mrs. Clark is anemic and guaiac positive, so there's definitely some internal bleeding, which looks like it's coming from a-"
"-friable tumour near the ampulla of vator." April cut Lexie off, a proud grin on her face as she subtly glanced toward Webber, hoping he had noticed.
"Yes, thank you for that, Dr. Kepner." Lexie faked a smile.
Gary sighed and looked down at his wife. "Dr. Swender told us the biopsy showed the cancer is back. But she said you might be able to take it out."
"There's a chance I won't be able to go in as deeply as I'll need to, but I promise to do everything I can," Webber assured them.
Gary smiled. "Anything you could do."
"We appreciate it, Dr. Webber." Alison smiled as well. "Thank you."
A little weirded out by the unspoken and not-so-subtle medical rivalry between April and Lexie, Webber instructed me to prep the patient for surgery, which was had scheduled for as soon as possible.
While I prepped Alison, I assured her and her husband that Webber was an excellent surgeon and that they had nothing to worry about. After a few calming assurances, their anxiety seemed to lessen.
Once the OR was ready, I instructed a nurse to take Gary to the waiting room before bringing Alison up to the surgery floor. While the scrub nurses and anesthesiologist worked at getting Alison ready in the operating room, Webber, April, Lexie, and I scrubbed.
