With all of our options exhausted and no sign of going anywhere any time soon, Alex called the hospital. At first, we were put on the phone with Jackson, but he soon got Arizona on. "We can't move." Alex spoke into the phone, "We're a friggin' sitting duck. We gotta take the baby out of here, but the three of us can't move the damned incubator and all this crap on a highway."
With that, Arizona and everyone she was with in the E.R. started relaying what to do to Alex over the phone. "We can't regulate her temp without the incubator," Alex said to Arizona.
"They may have to leave the kid." we heard Mark say as we were now on speakerphone.
"We are not leaving the baby," Meredith told them.
"At least one of you should get out of the rig," Mark told us.
Derek spoke up, "What are they gonna do, flip a coin?"
"They're sitting in a powder keg."
Alex turned to us, "Get out."
"Alex." Meredith and I both said.
"Go." he ordered, "There's no reason for all of us to get killed."
I shook my head, "Well, we're no safer in the middle of the damn road."
"I'm telling you to get out of the damn rig," Alex shouted as thunder sounded again, the storm still going strong.
"Alex, if you want to go, you go." Meredith told him, "You're not gonna fix your guilt by me and Ellie letting you die in an ambulance so that I c-"
Before Meredith finished her sentence, the ambulance got hit. Everything flew around, and the force of the impact sent Meredith, Alex, and myself flying up out of our seats and around the back of the rig. Everything happened so quickly as the ambulance skidded down the street and I smacked my head on the metal side of the truck. I could still feel the ambulance moving as my vision slowly got darker, and then, nothing.
My eyes opened again I have no clue how long after they closed. The rig had stopped moving and things had been thrown around the place. "Are you okay?" I heard Alex's voice, "You're bleeding. What about Ellie?"
"E-Ellie's alive." I groaned as I sat up.
Meredith quickly stood up and picked up the baby. "Mer, what are you doing?" Alex asked.
"Get me a blanket." Meredith said, "I'm taking her out."
Grabbing a blanket, I wrapped it around the infant. "Mer, put her back in," Alex told her.
"She just got thrown around a plastic box." Meredith pointed out, "She needs to be held. I'm not putting her back in."
Alex reached over and looked at the cut on Meredith's head, "Are you okay?"
"No, I'm not okay." Meredith groaned.
"Guys, listen, we gotta we outta here before this thing blows." Alex started to pack up some stuff.
"Well, how are we gonna do that?" I asked, "She's connected to a million things."
Alex sighed, "You got the bag, Mer's got the baby. I'll get the 0-2 tank and the I.V. and we're gonna disconnect her from the antibiotics."
"Is that gonna be okay?" Meredith was skeptical.
Alex took a deep breath, "Yeah, it's gonna have to be."
Once we had everything ready, Alex pushed open the back doors and we stepped out. As soon as our feet hit the pavement and we look up, our faces fell. The road was scattered with bodies from the now overturned and flaming vehicle that had hit us. We had a whole new problem on our hands now.
