As the saw buzzed throughout the O.R., I watched as Bailey cut away the horn from Jerry. "Dr. Bailey, how can you tell which is horn and which is finger?" Jackson asked.
"If there's no bleeding, I'm still cutting off the horn." Bailey explained, "If there's a lot of bleeding, I'm probably cutting off a finger. Sometimes this job is very simple, Dr. Avery."
As Bailey finished off a section of horn and pulled it away from the hand, we all stared at it. Bailey handed the horn to Lexi, but when she hesitated, Jackson stepped up. "I can do that if you want." Jackson offered.
"She's fine." Bailey refused, "Right, Dr. Grey?"
"Right." Lexie's cheekbones rose, a sign that she had forced a smile under her mask. Taking the forceps which held the horn, she turned and placed it into one of the trays behind herself.
We all watched as Lexie groaned. "What?" she asked us.
"Nothing." Mark, who was helping with the saw, told her before he went back to cutting.
An hour or so later, Mark let out a groan. "What?" Bailey lifted her head to look in his direction.
Shaking his head, he sighed, "Well, I thought I had some normal skin here, but it's already starting to grow warts."
"What does that mean?" I asked.
"It means Jerry's not going to get his skin grafts anytime soon." Bailey answered, "He's gonna have a lot of open wounds."
Jackson looked up at us, "So he was right. He is gonna look like Frankenstein."
As Bailey gave Jackson a death stare, Lexie cleared her throat, "Maybe I should go update the wife." she suggested, "You know, prepare her for the worst? I mean, if...if I was her, I would...I would want to know sooner than later."
"You're not going anywhere," Bailey told her.
"Which is fine," Lexie sounded too eager, "because I'm...I'm fine right here. I'm...I'm just saying, if...if, you know, if I were the wife I'd want to know sooner than later."
When Bailey glared up at Lexie, Lexie became quiet, "Later it is, then." she said.
The monitor beeped rhythmically as we continued to pile up the bits of horn that we had removed from Jerry. "Twelve pounds." Jackson chuckled, "eBay here I come."
Lexie started to laugh, but then she didn't stop. "Dr. Grey," Bailey warned.
"Sorry." Lexie giggled.
"You are doctors." Bailey reminded us, "If you're going to be doctors, caregivers, you need to be able to handle anything the human body throws at you."
As Dr. Bailey shook her head, she went back to cutting. However, mere seconds later she jumped away from the table, arms flailing. "Look right there." she squealed, "A spider. It's a spider. Oh! J...No, no. Come one. Somebody do something, please. It's a spider."
Lexie pointed to the arachnid, "That?"
"Yes!" Bailey freaked out, "It just crawled out of that horn. Quick, kill it! Kill it!"
Lexie reached out and swiped the spider off of the table onto the floor. Then, she stomped on it with her foot and made sure it was dead. "Thank you. Thank you." Bailey took a deep breath, "Oh, thank you. Oh, thank you. Okay. Okay. Whew."
After the spider incident, we finished up the procedure before Mark took Jerry to the ICU where he could also update the wife. Once everyone was done for the day, a few of us went over to Joe's to have a drink and unwind.
"Come one. Just admit it. You're still a virgin." Alex continued to pressure April.
"No, I'm not." April denied.
Jackson smiled, "Hey, there's no shame in it."
"Really?" April asked.
"No, there's shame," Jackson chuckled.
"A lot of shame." Alex agreed, "Tell her, Mer."
Meredith stayed quiet for a few seconds, "I, um...I was gonna say something, and then I forgot to stop drinking. Has anybody seen Christina?"
Everyone shook their heads as Lexi joined us. "Okay. So only one person looked at me like a psycho who might run down the hall naked," Lexie informed us, "and Dr. Bailey screamed like a little bitch baby over a spider, so I'm feeling pretty good, you know, for a crazy person."
"Well, nobody gives a crap if you're crazy." Jackson told her, "We're all crazy."
Alex nodded, "Yeah, look at April. She's still a virgin."
Everyone began to laugh, a little harder than we should have but we had already had a few drinks each. "Yeah, well, Mark gives a crap, okay?" Lexie sighed, "He stares at me like I'm a menace to myself and everyone around me. Wait. You're still a virgin?"
The chuckling commenced once again as Jackson threw a loose arm around my shoulder and pulled me towards him. "Stop. Okay?" April finally had enough, "Just stop. I'm a virgin. Yes. So what? It's not something to talk about, okay? We all have things we don't talk about. Alex, you've been afraid of the elevator for, like, a month, but I never said anything because it's none of my business. And, Jackson, you wake up every night screaming because you have nightmares. And, Meredith, you don't talk about Christina because you're afraid she's never gonna be the same Christina again."
"Ellie, you refuse to go into the room that your sister stayed in because you hear her screams in your head. And, Lexie...for God's sake, Mark never thought you were a psycho. He loves you. That's why he stares at you, because he can't keep his eyes off the woman he loves. Of course, he's never gonna say anything 'cause he doesn't feel like he can. Look, we all have stuff we don't talk about. I am a twenty-eight-year-old virgin, mainly because I wanted my first time to be special, and then I waited too long, and partially because I'm pretty sure guys find me annoying. I'm a virgin. That doesn't make it drinks conversation. We all have stuff we don't talk about."
Everyone kept their mouths shut as April downed her entire drink. "Oh, April." Meredith smiled, "I'm liking you more and more."
"Thank you." April's tone had returned to it's soft, quiet self.
Once we had finished our drinks, we slowly started to split ways as I made my way home where I took a hot shower before crawling into bed with the TV on and falling asleep.
