Song Featured in Chapter: Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
"Dr. Sloan, are you almost done here?" Meredith asked as we entered Mark's O.R.
"I'm good in two seconds." he replied, "What's up?"
Meredith swallowed hard, "Um, I'll wait."
"I rocked this mandibular repair." Mark told us, not having the slightest clue of what we were about to tell him, "You'd never know this guy's jaw was broken in five places. I'm somewhat of an artist. Not Picasso, because then his jaw would be on his forehead. But like, uh, Chagall, Michelangelo. I'm Michelangelo. There, done. What do you got?"
Meredith and I just stared back at Mark, not being able to make words. No one had seen it coming...it just...appeared. Like that. In two seconds, everything had spiraled out of control.
"What the hell happened?" Mark yelled as he ran out into the ambulance bay with us.
"Car versus truck. That's all we know." Chief Webber replied.
Mark looked around frantically, "And her injuries. What...the baby?"
"We don't know yet," Derek told him.
"Well, why the-why the hell don't you know?" Mark asked, "Someone get me a trauma gown."
The Chief shook his head, "Mark, you need to sit this one out."
Mark refused, "I'm not sitting this one out. That's Callie. That's my kid."
"Which is why you can't." the Chief explained, "I'm sorry. You can't be a doctor on this one."
"Screw you." Mark huffed as he grabbed a gown, "Screw all of you."
The Chief took a few steps towards him, "Look at me, Sloan. Look at me. Maybe I don't understand what you two have, how you have it, but I understand this, she is your family. Callie Torres and that baby are your family, and the best way that you can help your family is to step back and let the rest of us what you can't rationally do...save their lives. Okay?"
Mark nodded as the ambulance approached, "I'm in the room, you hear me? I'm in the room."The Chief nodded as the ambulance pulled in, "Okay. Hunt, you're in charge."
Owen nodded as we all rushed for the ambulance, "All right, everyone. Multiple blunt trauma protocol. Let's go."
"Tachycardic and hypotensive en route. Obvious head and chest injuries." Arizona announced as she jumped out of the back of the ambulance, her face cut up and bleeding while she held a grey blanket around herself.
"Callie? Callie." Owen called as the stretcher was pulled from the back of the vehicle with an all too familiar face on it, "We've got you, you hear me? Everything is going to be okay."
"She's hemorrhaging," I said.
Teddy stepped up, "Wait. Hold on. Is that blood coming from her chest?"
"What?" Bailey asked as someone pulled away Callie's oxygen mask.
"Calliope means...means music." Callie gurgled out, blood dripping from her mouth.
"Oh, honey, we're gonna fix you up just fine," Bailey assured her as Arizona and Mark stood close by, horrified.
