Sofia's POV

"So someone in here does know you after all, Sofia. You came rushing here when I told them I'd fire everyone," he said, motioning for Felicity to leave.

"I'll be right back, boss. I'll, um... go to the bathroom quickly," Felicity said in a sheepish voice.

Why the hell is everyone so scared of him? He's not God. He's just a devil.

"You miss me so much that you've been staring at me the whole time, Fia," Benjamin said, breaking the tension between us.

"Keep dreaming. And by the way, stop threatening people just to get to me. You can never change, can you?"

"You loved me for me. Actually, scratch that—you love me for me, and we both know I'm your favorite man in this world. Your favorite human being," he replied with a smirk.

Wow. He really was that. But he's not anymore.

If someone had asked me that question three years and six months ago, I would've said it was him. But now—now it's Elijah. And it will always be Elijah.

"You really think it's you?" I asked, laughing.

"I know it is, Sofia," he replied.

How the fuck does he know about Elijah? I wanted to ask, but I couldn't.

"How do you know?" I asked instead, hoping he hadn't found out the truth.

"You could never lie to me. You suck at it. And when I said I was your favorite person in the world, your reaction changed. So who the fuck is he?" He took a dangerous step toward me, glaring. "Where the hell is this son of a bitch?"

Oh God. He's going to lose his temper again.

Before I could say anything, Marko walked in. I really love this brother of mine.

"Is everything okay, boss?" Marko asked, glancing at me.

"Everything is fine. Get back to work," Benjamin replied, never taking his eyes off me.

"Is he married?" I asked Benjamin, deliberately pissing him off.

"You can see the damn ring on his fucking finger," he snapped, taking another step forward.

I saw Marko drop something and immediately turned my attention to him.

"Hey—Mark. Marko!" I shouted.

I noticed Benjamin staring at me, shocked.

I can't believe I screwed up. He's definitely going to use Marko to get to me now.

"What, Veronica?" Marko asked, turning around.

He used my second name. Benjamin knows I never tell anyone my second name unless they're close to me.

"You dropped something," I mumbled.

Benjamin was still staring at me, stunned. I swear his eyes didn't blink once.

"Thanks, love," Marko said on purpose, clearly trying to piss Benjamin off. He already knew he couldn't hide knowing me anymore.

"What's wrong? Cat got your tongue?" I asked, laughing in Benjamin's face.

"So he's the one you were rushing to meet. And he's the one you were talking to on the phone yesterday," Benjamin said, folding his arms and looking at me dangerously.

But I wasn't scared of him. I knew he'd never hit me or kill me. And I have Elijah now. I don't need anyone else.

Anna, Marko, Annette, and Elijah are the only family I have—and need.

"Yes. He's the one I rushed to surprise that day. But you surprised me by ruining my day. And I wasn't the one who called him yesterday. His wife did," I said, finally telling the truth. There was no point lying anymore.

"You haven't changed. A fucking married man. My business partners weren't enough—now you're even sleeping with a married man. How dare you, Sofia."

I couldn't believe him. The man I once called my husband. The man I loved. Still thinking I cheated on him.

And now he thinks I'm sleeping with Marko—my brother, my best friend's husband, Elijah's best friend's father.

God, he makes me sick.

"No. How dare you, Benjamin. I never cheated on you. Not ever. Go to hell."

I opened my purse, pulled out the check, and threw it in his face.

"What? You kept this check all these years? Why didn't you use it?" he asked angrily.

"I didn't want your money. Why would I use money from someone who called me a cheater?" I said, trying not to cry.

"One million is a lot of money, Sofia," he said coldly.

"I don't care. I don't need it."

"You married me for money, didn't you?" he said, grabbing my hand and forcing the check back into it.

"I was desperate back then. And that was before you accused me of cheating on you."

Marrying Benjamin was never about the money.

When he first asked me to marry him, I did it because I needed to escape my past and start a new life—and yes, I needed money. But after our engagement, I fell in love with him.

He was rude, but he never abused me or called me names I hated. He called me Babe, Wifey, Fia, Mia, and Sofi. I never hated those names.

They were just annoying.

But God, I missed them.

"And now you don't want it anymore? Listen, it was a deal. I made a promise—so keep it," he said, not asking but ordering me.

"I never stayed married to you for a year, so I broke the deal. Give the money to those women you used to bring into your house," I said, throwing the check back at him.

"Sofia, if you leave, just know I'll fire Mark—or Marko, whatever his name is," he said with a smirk.

"Um—" I was lost for words. How could I convince him to leave Marko out of this?

"Cat got your tongue?" he mocked.

"You always want everything your way, don't you?" I asked, stepping closer.

"You know me so well, Sofia. But I'll leave Marko alone—on one condition."

I froze.

"What?" I asked quickly, hoping it was something I could do.

"Answer the questions I asked. I'll give you one week to think about it," he said, turning away.

"What? There has to be another way. Benjamin, please," I pleaded, my voice breaking. "You're so ruthless, mean, heartless—and hell, I hate you so much. I don't care how dangerous you are, Benjamin Carson."

That made him turn back. He smiled and crossed his arms.

"You may be sweet, kind, loving, and full of fucking feelings—but God, you're a fucking cheater," he said before turning away again.

As he walked out, he added, "Tick tock, tick tock, Sofia. Time is ticking. You have one week only."

And just like that, I'm forced to talk about my past again.

This time, I have to think of Elijah.

I'll tell him. It's the least I can do after everything Anna and Marko sacrificed for me. If telling Benjamin the truth means Marko keeps his job, then I'll do it.

But if I do, I'll be ready to run again.

You may run from the past, but somehow it always catches up to you.

Someone once told me that.

And if Victoria could survive it, so can I.

This time, I have a child.
