I was running in the woods. I didn't know where I was or where I was going. I was in a nightgown, soaking wet and barefoot in the rain, which was surprisingly warm.
"LEILANI!"
I gasped at the animalistic tone but kept running.
"YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM ME!"
I kept running, looking behind me from time to time. I was running out of breath, tiring, and ran right into Kyros. He locked his arms around me and pushed me up against a tree. His eyes glowed red tinged with gold, and he bared fangs. I cried out as he braced me against it, and lifted me. As I began to slide down, he dragged his lips up the center of my chest, pressed his mouth against my throat, and growled, sending goosebumps through my whole body.
I woke up with a start. I looked at the clock. It was two o'clock in the afternoon so I'd slept five hours after arriving in Chicago and checking in. I fell asleep with The Werewolf Handbook in my hand and The Monster Hunter's Handbook next to me. These were put in the car with a READ ME post it on each one. Not good bedtime reading, for sure.
I turned to the nightstand to look at my phone, which was plugged into the lamp charging. I checked to see if I got any more messages than the text from Dad telling me to meet them in front at six. I felt so nervous about this.
What were we going to do? We had done nothing to the Kincaids, yet they hated us. They didn't approve of my mom and dad being together and in turn, my birth was a curse to them. I took a shower and changed clothes, packing everything in a laundry bag so I could do it when I got to Marina City.
But wait--what if this is another escape?
God I was getting paranoid, just like Dad. I did my laundry first. I went shopping for food at a nearby mart, mostly fruits, veggies and chips, but I did manage to squeeze a footlong sub and water in there. The rest of the water lay on the floor.
I laid in bed fully dressed, trying to think what to do. One thing for sure, I needed an escape route. What if they tracked us down? The Kincaids were rich, and by default were connected, so what could I do?
I went into my backpack and pulled out my laptop. I used the global app to find a spot to leave the car in that wasn't far from public transportation but also might be free. It would take time to get it there, time to get back downtown. I had to get moving.
I found a commuter train stop I could leave my car at, secured it best I could and headed back on that train to the Loop, basically called that because of all the train lines looping around the city's most busy area.
My cell phone rang. "Yeah?"
"Don't forget to strap up, just in case."
"Aren't you at Marina City?"
"Meet me at House of Blues."
"Okay."
FInally happy with all my prep, I made my way to Marina City. I stood in front of the House of Blues, waiting.
"Hey, Firefly."
I recognized my father's voice and turned around. He stood there, looking tired, but smiling. "Daddy!" I went to him and hugged him. "Where's Didi?"
"She's upstairs."
We took the elevator up.
