Dad barricaded the door behind us, and then other wolves responded to the one other howl.

"How many are there?" I asked.

"I don't know," Dad replied. "Some are werewolves, but others are normal wolves. They are using their rank to get information from the ones who live here."

"Do you know if--" I was trying to phrase this correctly. "If he is out there?"

Dad exhaled heavily. "I think he is."

"The first howl," I guessed in a whisper. It was strong.

"Yes," Dad's head tilted to the side slightly as he frowned. "He was calling you, sort of in a teasing 'come out come out' kind of way." His frown deepened. "There are other cabins in these woods. Let's hope we don't hear any human screams."

Didi and I looked at each other. She reached out and squeezed my hand, and I squeezed back.

"How about wolfsbane?"

"That would hurt us, too, Didi." Dad said. "I wish we could use Mountain Ash or something like that."

"Mountain Ash?" I repeated. "That stuff?"

"Mistletoe too." Didi put in.

"God," I sighed. "Unbelieveable."

"You've got a lot to learn, I'm sorry, baby." He said. "But you'll catch on--"

The howls and growls stopped abruptly. Suddeny the silence seemed very loud. "You two head upstairs--"

"Daddy," I gasped. "Let us help--"

"We have trained for this." Didi said.

"No good," he shook his head. "Believe me there will be more chances to prove yourselves against these--"

"Martin?"

We all went starkstill. That came from right outside!

"Just come out, let's not make this difficult."

My heart was in my throat. I began strapping on my guns and pack, as did Didi. Dad was always strapped. We stayed low and crept up the steps.

"Oh, no, your daughter is here, isn't she?" the voice went on. "I caught her scent at the university, but that sweet thing hid from me. Does she know? It occurred to me that she may not, but now--well, the pup's out of the bag, isn't it? And what is that--oh, no, a human?! This is why you mixed breeds are so much trouble."

Dad gestured for us to go to our room, and he went the other way to his down the opposite hall. We closed the door as softly as we could, and turned the lock.

I felt like the air was heavier all of a sudden. Kyros was here. I felt weak all of a sudden. He just seemed closer... "He's close-"

"I am what, darling?" he whispered, breaking the silence as he came up the steps slowly. I looked at Didi, who heard nothing. We heard each other with wolf hearing, I realized. He was light on his feet, but his size was a giveaway on the wooden steps. He wasn't alone, either.

Didi's eyes were so wide I could see them in the dark. She slipped into a shirt and jacket from my laundry. She gasped and pointed at the mirror. I turned to see my own yellow eyes staring back at me. I gasped softly. I crawled over the bed and opened the window.

There was a soft knock on the door. "Little one, little one, let me in."

I tapped Didi on the shoulder and pointed out. She crawled out and onto the roof of the porch. The door opened and I saw a huge shadow and glowing eyes! I pulled out a smoke bomb and threw it onto the floor. A sound of alarm came from him as we climbed out of the window and slid down.

"GET HER!"

Just as we hit the ground, I recognized Dad's shadow run to his truck. God, he was fast.

"Everything we need is already in the cars," Didi reminded, and she was headed off in the direction of my jeep.

I ran top speed. I had the furthest to go to get away. I was scared, and I was moving faster than I probably ever had in my life. This was the wolf in me I was feeling now--the adrenaline, the speed, enhanced senses--oh, no--

There were at least four wolves, I could smell each one now, but one I already knew...I didn't know I knew till just now. I didn't know.
