This was definitely against my better judgment, but I followed Kyros and David to a part of the Shenandoahs that my father never took to me to. I remember asking why we didn't go, and his answer was simply I didn't need to go there. He was right.

The house just looked like a family vacation cabin, albeit a nice one. I couldn't get over all the windows.

"Our concubines live in the house," David broke into my thoughts as we entered. Humans were everywhere, some actually lazing and watching TV as they were being fed on. Others were continuing on as normal households, healthy, interacting and even laughing, but all stopped at the sight of us.

"David!" Random cries rose in relief, some even began to cry. They all raced toward David and hugged him, some even kneeling.

"I'm alright." He ran his hands over their hair as if they were pets, some he hugged back. "All well above, Joshua?"

Joshua reminded me of Ben, making me cringe. His eyes were kind, face boyishly handsome but holding eyes that suggested there was a lot more to him. "Yes."

"Tara?"

"She is below, and we did as instructed."

"How is she?"

"Alright, but she needs you," Josh said softly. "She really does."

David took off like a shot, and we followed before anyone could object. We went to a master bedroom at the back of the house, and what greeted us had us slack-jawed.

The bedroom was converted to a hospital room. There was a small woman in bed, Creole in looks. her dark and thick curls spread on the cream colored pillowcase.  Her nightgown was navy blue in color, and from the sheen of it, made of satin or silk. Her eyes were dark brown and soulful, widening as she recognized David.

"David!" she cried tearfully, her arms reaching out to him.

"Tara!" he cried softly, racing into her arms, expertly navigating through machines that monitored her health. I noticed she was having a transfusion. He gently lifted her upper body as her arms closed around him. "I'm alive again."

Tara laughed softly as he showered kisses in her hair and on her face. "I'm alright, but so much better now that you're here, away from them!"

"I had to distract them so they could get you away," he shook his head. "I had no choice, love, none."

She held him again, so close, tears streaming down her cheeks, her eyes closed as if she was in heaven. Her eyes fluttered open at Kyros and me. "Darling, we have guests?"

He rose and sat next to her in a chair. "Uh, they helped me get away."

"Aren't they--"

"Leilani Martin, quarterbreed." Lani extended her hand and stepped foreward.

"Kyros Kincaid." I said quickly, and braced for recognition.

"Kyros Kincaid?!" Tara's eyes widened as she gasped. "You've made a deal with a devil--"

"We have always had a treaty about the Shenandoahs," I interjected. "and thank Goddess, we broke it."

"We are in the middle of an attempt at a double take over, love," David nodded. "My father may have been murdered."

"I told you--"

David nodded, his eyes rolling. "Yes, I know but it wasn't the wolves. It was Samuel."

She gasped. "Samuel?"

"He and his followers made a deal with wolves who are trying to take over the Kincaid territory."

"You're his mate, then?" Tara asked Lani.

"Yes, I am."

"So this has to do with you not being a full breed," she whispered, her expression soft. "as there have been problems with David and me getting married and having this baby." She swallowed hard. "I'm still human, but I will change when the baby is born. David has finally agreed."

"I have no choice, I need her to survive," he said flatly. "You're so--"

"I am getting transfusions whenever I need, and eating when I'm hungry. I go for walks around the house, and I was outside in the afternoons after lunch till it snowed."

"Sweetheart-"

"Love?" She caressed his cheek. "I'm fine. Get our home back. This baby is coming and we'll need it. We will need it and you."
