"I am not used to such insolence," I growled at Christian, who was one of the vampire counsel leaders of the Vampire Northwest Territory. "There were killings in our territory, and we saw the bodies. Your people--vampires--are definitely overstepping!"
"I assure you, it must be some mistake," Christian said softly. "We do have some newborns--"
"Newborns?!" I was outraged. "It was decided there would be no converts unless--"
"I heard you have one--"
"She was not bitten, she was born," I knew he was speaking of Leilani. "She is from the Midwest and she is not your concern!"
"Is she?" Christian's eyebrows raised. "Vincent says that you trailed her across the country, and she had no knowledge of our borders--"
"She is not full breed," I hated telling him. "She was unaware of what her identity and birth entails." I took a deep breath. "And she is my mate, so tread lightly, Christian."
"Ah, the dark eyes," Christian saw that my anger flared. "My apologies. I know to stay out of the way of a wolf and his mate--"
"Thank you for remembering that much about the treaty," I said. Suddenly, I felt weak. Then, I felt sick. No....not Leilani....! "We will have to pick this up, later."
"Trouble?" Christian's eyes narrowed.
"My mate is in distress," I whispered to Gordon.
"What did she say?" Gordon whispered back.
I swallowed hard. I could feel her feelings, track her for miles, but until we consummated, I would not be able to communicate with her telepathically. "She is unwell, I must go." I turned my attention to the vampires, suddenly the least of my worries. "My apologies for shortening this meeting, but my meaning isn't lost. This is your only warning."
With one look at Gordon, we were gone.
When we got to the SUV, I ordered, "Take the wheel, and step on it, Gordon."
"What's--"
"I feel sick, she's sick, Gordon, and it's bad." I shook my head, worried. "It's bad."
We drove at top speed to the manor, and I went straight to the dungeon. A pack medic was looking Leilani over, and Asa was watching him. "Asa--?"
"I think she's been poisoned." Asa looked close to tears. "Wolfsbane, maybe."
"What--"
"She was having tea."
"Lani?" I gave her a light shake, and she moaned softly. "Lani!" I looked up at them. "Get my doctor!"
"Your doctor, alpha?"
"Let's be clear!" I reached in my pocket and pulled it out. I wanted to make this official, a ceremony, a party...but time had run out.
Everyone in the room froze as I gently put the necklace around her neck. I'd given her the necklace of our pack, the one that declared her my mate and the pack's luna. "Get our doctor, now!" I threw off my jacket and stripped down to my underwear. Skin to skin would help. I wouldn't leave her, I couldn't.
My doctor, Nasir, arrived. "Alpha?" He opened his bag. He looked at the necklace, then my eyes. "Looks like wolfsbane poisoning."
"Antidote?"
He looked at her. "Yes, we do manage to keep a little around, just in time, though. Another hour or two..." He shook his head.
I got in bed with her and spooned her body against mine. "Go ahead." I planted kisses on her cheek and temple as the doctor gave her an injection.
"Are you staying in the dungeon, Alpha?" Asa asked.
I saw that Gordon and Asa stood at the door of the cell, ready for anything I had to say. I'd never been more grateful to the Goddess to see my childhood friend and my beta standing side by side. "Yes." I looked at Gordon. "Let out the twins. They can help, and they are like family to her--"
"Alpha--"
"Someone tried to kill my mate," I growled. "I can only trust those in this dungeon and Quinn." I looked at them all--Gordon, Asa, Ian, Logan, and my pack doctor. "You're all I've got. Twins, guard the door. Gordon, Asa? Oversee any food or drink that comes down here. Get clothes for both of us. Have Quinn look over security cameras." They all bowed their heads, and went to one knee. "Thank you. Now, go!" They took off. I looked down at her, and curled my body around her to keep her warm. "Oh, Goddess...Goddess, help."
"Kyros?" She looked so pale, her voice was hoarse.
"I'm here, I'm not going anywhere, love."
"Myra."
"What?" I frowned. "Mora?"
"Bracelet."
I had to calm my rage. "Rest, you're going to be okay. I'm not leaving you."
