I decided not to wear a suit. It would be overkill going to a bar, not to mention a bit conspicuous.
When we entered The Lone Wolf, we got the mixed reaction I anticipated. Some ignored us completely, some watched us closely, and at least one got up and left, which meant we'd better be ready for anything.
"May I help you?"
I looked at the young wolf behind the bar. "Whiskey."
"Comin' up." He turned to get my glass and pour my drink.
"Hey, there."
I looked up to see an older man coming from the back and to the bar. He sat beside me. "Hey."
"I am not sure if we should be honored, insulted, or battle ready."
My drink was served to me with a look of warning from the bartender. "I am here for information."
"Information?"
"Yes," I nodded. "You're Stephen, right?"
"Yes, yes, I am....Mr. Kincaid."
I took a deep breath. Damn. I took a quick swig of my drink. They wouldn't dare do something to it knowing who I am. "I am looking for a girl--"
"We got plenty here," Stephen did a sweeping gesture. "but since your intentions are less than honorable--"
I raised a hand. "I am looking for a specific one...named Leilani?"
"Never heard of her," Stephen said with a shrug. "Can you describe--"
"Let's dispense with the niceties, here--" I raised a hand, and bowed my head. A group of my men came in casually dressed but now outnumbered his in the bar. "You have seen her, you do know her. I have her scent and I know she's been here."
"So why ask?"
"I get the feeling she is gone now," I leaned forward. "I want to find her."
"Why?" He asked. "She's lost everything, she isn't a threat, she's innocent."
"That's my business."
"Can't help you."
"I think you can, Stephen," I told him coolly. "And I can put you under the protection of my clan."
He shook his head, chuckling. "Protection?"
"We won't bother you and if you need our help, we will be there," I explained. "My word is my bond."
"All this for a girl?" Stephen's eyes narrowed. "You...you said you had her scent?"
I found myself picking up my drink and taking a hard swallow before I answered. "Yes."
"Followed it here?"
"I am a full blooded alpha," I growled softly. "it's not that hard."
"Yes, it is, it is that hard." Stephen gave me a look that made me uneasy. "She is your enemy?"
"She isn't my friend."
He stared at me and began to laugh. "Let me come clean here. We don't know where she is."
"What?"
"She cut out after her father's memorial service."
"And told you nothing?"
"She thought it best, I think, and I see why," He looked me over again. "She's been gone awhile. She could be anywhere by now."
"Any ideas?" I said quickly. "I'd appreciate any information you can give me."
"She said she wanted to go to Canada, light a candle, spread some ashes," Stephen shrugged. "She said a lot of things."
"Canada?!" I hated that idea. Canada was another clan's territory, not to mention all the vampires in the northeast who hunted in the mountains and forests.
"It's about her safety now, isn't it?"
He broke into my thoughts and caught me off guard. "I want to find her, that's all." The man was old, he knew I was worried now.
An easy smile lit his face. "Before you go on this search, you need to figure why, boy."
My jaw clench. "I'm not your boy, but in light of your age, I'll let it slide." Only my father called me boy. "Thank you." I rose from my seat. My entourage looked ready to act. I gave a nod toward the door and we all left.
"Y'all come back now."
"We will, that's a promise." As soon as I came outside. "You two, watch this place and everybody in it. Somebody find out what they've bought in the last week. Somebody might have bought a ticket. Go!"
