"We've got to do something." I had been waiting for Gordon to make a move. It had been days and I felt like we were under some sort of house arrest. Charles's men remained behind to make sure we didn't cheat, but I couldn't help but notice that some also left the day after he did when it was supposed to be a two on two challenge.
"Asa, we were told to remain here." Gordon was ever dutiful, but I promised Kyros's mother--our mother--that I would let nothing happen to him. My instincts were on high alert, and I felt something had happened, and it wasn't right.
"Fine, you do that," I nodded. "You are the beta, and you should be here. Edward should be here, being family leadership. But I don't, I don't have to be." I went to our mother's old room, and pulled out the burner phone that Kyros left for me. Taking a last look around, I turned it on, and saw I had missed a call. "Uh oh." I retrieved the voice mail, and listened.
"Asa, listen to this carefully and delete it," Kyros's voice bit out quickly. He took a deep breath. "We have found that Charles and Liam and a vampire named Samuel may have killed David the first of the southeast vampire coven. They are in league with rebels in the Southeastern vampire coven. We found and rescued David the second and are hiding with him, his human pregnant wife and his loyals."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing . "What the--"
"This is bad, I know," Kyros's voice went on. "Illegal newborns are in the Shenandoahs and possibly the Appalachians. Their stronghold is in Charlotte, but they have a location in Shenandoah. Loyal vampires are coming from New Orleans to help David, and I need you to gather loyals from other territories and place a call to Amber of the Makyas across the Mississippi. Tell them what is going on and to meet us with reinforcements in Cave Spring." He took a deep breath. "We will hopefully stand there and end this. I will see you soon."
I scrambled to my feet and found Edward and Gordon. I tossed the phone to Edward, then Edward tossed it to Gordon. I put the pBoth looked surprised and then angry.
"So Charles men are not here to make sure we don't cheat--"
"They're here to make sure that they succeed when they do, Edward," I growled. "Come on, before they realize we're alone together. Have you ever noticed that they check our whereabouts in the compound? Sometimes can find us a little too easily?"
Gordon frowned. He knew what I was talking about.
I led them to the kitchen and I began cooking.
"What are you doing?" Gordon asked. "I thought you wanted to--"
I put my finger to my lips and turned on the stove fan which was loud. Then I pulled out some steaks and threw them in the broiler, sprayed oil in a pan and tossed vegetables in it. It was good enough to drown out conversation if the place was bugged. "I've got an idea."
