Fixer upper
I force my eyes open at the sound of the doorbell being pushed over and over again, my morning wake up call, I think as I glance at the time.
"Oh shit, I'm late for work," I jump up and run to the door.
"I see you're alive," Del says as she pushes past me Carly and Missy in toe. I'm surprised to see Missy but blow it off as I spin around glaring at all three of them, waiting for one of them to tell me why they're here. "Don't stress about being four hours late for work, Alex has something he's working on anyway."
I fold my arms across my chest irritated by their intrusion into my sleep, especially if I don't have to work. "Ok, so since none of you are going to come right out and tell me, why are you here?"
"Well words gotten around that your mama and daddy are coming home today and Alex, being the nice guy that he is has offered to rent you his mama and daddy's old cabin," Del explains while the other two stand, silently waiting for her to get to the point. I know it's more like she harassed him into letting me rent it but that really doesn't matter to me. It would be great to have my own place, so I don't have to listen to my mom go on and on about how wonderful Alex is.
"What's the catch?" I ask remembering the way Alex left here last night. He wasn't happy.
"Well let's just say the man don't use it for nothing so I talked him into it."
"Fine what's the catch," I repeat myself, now knowing there is one with her avoidance of the question.
"It's sat empty for the last six years since his mama's death." She spits out but still looks as if she's hiding something.
"And?"
"There's a little storm damage and the yard needs some tending. I haven't been to that cove in years, so who knows what it looks like, but that's why I brought the girls," She says with a huge smile and wave of her hand toward Carly and Missy, who don't look like they came willingly.
"Alright let me change and We'll go check it out.
An hour later we are standing at the end of an overgrown driveway looking at what looks like a wooded area.
"Are you sure there's still a cabin here?" I ask staring at the trees and plant life that seemed to have swallowed the cabin that Alex grew up in.
"Um.... Alex said it's in there somewhere," Delilah's uncharacteristic slouch telling me that she is just as surprised as I am at the view in front of us.
"Yawl act like you aint ever had to do a little work," Missy stomps toward the trees, yanking the smaller ones out of the ground by their roots and tossing them aside. I push off the side of Delilah's car figuring it's going to be my place, I had better get my hands dirty.
It takes us the better part of an hour to make a path to the door and then another twenty minutes to clear the overgrowth from the door and the surrounding area to get it open. Once everything has been cleared I turn the knob and push on the door, nothing happens, I push harder again nothing happens, Del shoves against the door with her shoulder at the same time that I push, and the door flies off it's rusty hinges sending both Del and I sliding across the floor.
"Are yawl alright," A frightened Missy asks as her and Carly stand in the doorway mouth open in shock.
Del and I look at each other before busting out into a fit of laughter.
"What are we going to do about the door?" Carly asks as she inspects the rusty hinges and the rotted wood around them.
"We'll figure it out," Del says as we help each other off the floor.
