I did not care about Isabella Swan. Not one tiny bit, but I got to Phoenix faster than I had ever gotten anywhere. I knew James, and all his tricks. I had to be in that ballet studio if Bella was to have any chance of surviving.
When I walked into the studio I was immediately met by James, "Line. What a pleasant surprise. Here to help?"
"Of course J! I wouldn't miss this for the world," I lied straight through my teeth, "you care so much about this kill, it's been the most eventful one yet."
"You want to know why."
"You know me so well," I said with a shaky laugh.
"It was seeing that girl; the really little one. She was the one I told you about."
"Your biggest mistake; the only one to get away." Oh Alice, I can't imagine what he will do to her if he fails with Bella.
"Yes exactly. Seeing her there, as a vampire, infuriated me. I wanted to just kill her then, but then I smelled the human. The way everyone immediately protected her, I needed her dead. She is my redo of the little vampire. This time I won't mess up."
As much as I hated James was going after someone my family cared for, I had to feel emotional for him. I know how much losing Alice has killed him over the years, but it won't hurt him for much longer. I know my family will kill one of my best friends; I had to say goodbye now.
"James, I love you. I have since the day I met you, and long before Victoria came around. I know they will follow Bella where ever she goes and I fear you will die tonight. Please don't do this, if you stop now they may let you live." I knew he could hear the pain in my voice as I spoke to him. I needed him to be safe, he was so one of my first loves outside of the Volturi.
He walked towards me before placing a hand on my face, "Adeline I love you. I always have and always will. I have to do this; I have to have her, even if it ends in my death," he rested his forehead against mine, "Promise me you will look after Victoria. We both know how she is."
"A ball of fire," I said with a laugh.
The laughter spread between the both of us before we both stopped. Bella could be smelled and heard in the distance.
"James," I asked hesitantly, "Kiss me, one last time?"
"You didn't have to ask," he said before pressing his lips on to mine.
Today I'd be losing my best friend and past love.

When I heard Bella enter the studio building, I immediately left. I did not go far, but far enough to call my family and let them know where Bella was. Edward was the first to arrive, though everyone else arrived shortly afterwards.
I waited outside the building until I heard he fighting stop, to which I walked inside.
To my left I saw Bella on the ground, Edward sucking the venom out of her hand. To my right, I saw flames, I tried to contain myself but I cried out at the sight. I walked over and stood close to my burning friend, not thinking about the people in the room with me.
"I love you James, I will forever. You may have been a horrible person and best friend, but you deserved so much better than this. You deserved to be happy with Vic for eternity. I promised I would watch her and I will," I took a breathe before yelling, "gosh I hate you, James! I hate you! Why couldn't you just listen for once? I hate you for leaving me. Why do you have to leave?"
I felt myself being pulled from the studio by a very large pair of arms, no one other than Emmett, but I didn't stop talking.
"Why did he leave? Why? I hate him. I hate them both."
"Shhh Adeline, it's going to be okay. You're going to be okay."
"They don't ever truly love me"

An hour later, I sat in the car with Rose and Emmett as we went back to Forks. Bella had been taken to the hospital under the lie that she had fallen in a hotel, and the ballet studio was burned to the ground. I sat with my feet in the seat, head resting on my knees, I knew Rose hated it but she didn't comment.
"Adeline," Emmett said softly, "I've-we've missed you."
"I missed you too, big bear."
"Adeline, I want to kill you."
"I know Rose, I'm sorry."
"I wasn't finished. I want to kill you, but I am so glad that you are home. I have missed you so so much."
"I've missed you too."
"Adeline," Emmett said quietly, "Can I ask you something about everything?"
I nodded my head, locking eyes with him in the rear view mirror.
"James and you?"
I sighed, "I met him shortly after I left the Volturi. He was a promise of a new life, a promise of love. We fell for each other and shortly were together, though we both knew we were not each other's mates. I was actually the one who introduced him to Victoria. After they met, James and I went back to just being best friends; we hadn't kissed or done anything romantic in a large number of years until tonight."
"I am so sorry Adeline," Rose spoke, "I can not imagine how it must have felt for you to know he was going to die."
"Don't be sorry. As much as I loved him, James was reckless. If y'all hadn't have killed him, another coven would have. I am just glad I got to see him one last time before he was wiped off this earth, though I know it probably did not help my situation with Jasper. Who by the way was jealous of Caius. Were y'all aware of that?" Being back with the two of them felt natural, and once I opened my mouth everything came spiraling out.
"We did. In your memory you showed us, the two of you were very close. We all assumed something was going on, but Jasper just could not handle the thought."
"Well there was, but it was so long ago. Why did he get so mad now? I didn't even know him then?"
"Because he is your mate," Emmett said as if it was a clear answer, "The idea of you being with another is torture to him. He loves you Adeline."
